Why are you doing a 50% water change?
I am going to say no on the cycle question. There should be a vast amount of bacteria in your sand and live rock to prevent it.

Not unless your parameters between the tank and new water are so far off it kills something in the tank. The bacteria live on surfaces, not in the water column for the most part.

The reason I am saying i'm doing a 50% water change is because I have been running my tank without my sump because i was finishing the sump room in the basement. I will be introducing the sump to the DT this weekend and it will have about 75G of water in the sump! This is also why there is no fish. Everything else that is in the tank were hitch hikers in my live rock.

Match parameters as close as possible and go for it! Let's see some pictures of your set up!

I am going to post the pictures from start to finish this weekend but here is a couple of pics. keep in mind the room is a mess and not completed 100%. the room also has 3 designated brakers just for the sump room.My light will be in tomorrow as well. Bought it off a friend. Its a 7 bulb aquactinics constellation 48". So the sump is a 125 gallon with built in refuge. all pipe is spaw flex as well. I will post the finished room this weekend!!

well i think i'm doing a good job for my first salt water tank!! I can't wait to post pics when everything is up and running!! The room look so bare. I still have to build a work bench, plumb the laundry tub, hook up my RO/DI auto top off bucket, water change bucket and a couple of other small things. I will be busy this weekend that's for sure!!! lol

Looks good so far, I wish I had a basement with head room like that! Looking forward to the future updates. How did you keep your rock stacked like that? (epoxy, acrylic rods??)
