i was thinking yesterday and i have no actual filtration other than live rock, i have a hob aquaclear with the sponge, a bag of carbon and a couple bio balls, other than that ther are 2 circulation pumps, ive been like this ever since the start and havent had any water quality issues, ever, should i look into better filtration or if it aint broke dont fix it?

dont wanna start a new thread so ill post it here
stirred up the sand the other day moving rocks and my nitrates are at like 20, usually they are 0, the kid at the lfs said it was ok to have nitrates but my finger leather isnt opening right and hasnt opened its polyps in 2 days, i did a 50% water change the same day and have been letting it sit for 2 days, nitrates still 20, ammonia 0, nitrite i couldnt even tell a color so ima take that as 0, ph 8.0 (adding buffer), should i leave it alone and see what happens or should i do another wc like 5gal, its a 20l whats an acceptable amount of nitrates? If it aint broke dont fix it just keep up with your water changes. nitrates of 20 is fine that isnt too high especially for a leather.

You stirred up trapped wasted by messing with the sand bed. I always keep my san clean for this reason. Do a water change and lower the nitrates, 20 ppm is to high 5 ppm is the highest I would want to see. As for your "filtration" what you have works just fine. I only have a sump, skimmer, fuge and water movement. With reef tanks you dont need or want a big wet dry, canister or HOB skimmer. They have their place you use the HOB to run carbon as can canister filters.
