Toadstool Not Doing Well

I have a Toadstool that is about 2 weeks in my tank. Started off ok. Then started to withdraw. Now it is shedding its skin. Water flow is fine. So is light. Other softies doing great. Not sure what to do. Suggestions?

thanks

stewart

Shedding is normal for them especially when you first add them. It's probably just getting used to your tank. They are really resilient so I wouldn't be concerned yet.

leathers r tough. since u hv other leathers or softies, chemical warfare cant be ruled out. try running carbon.

I agree, just leave it alone.

This...he is just adjusting to your tank conditions.

Also I remember reading that leathers will shrivel up and shed their "skin" as part of their growing process. My finger leather and toadstool do this every 7-10 weeks. As a matter of fact, my finger leather just emerged from 5 days of being closed and shedding.

It seemed fine the first few days and then each day began to look worse. Seems very unhappy now.

Same thing here

Mine has been in the tank for 3 weeks now and is the only coral that doesn't look happy. From everything Ive read this is normal so I'm leaving it alone. I just keep telling myself they are tough as nails and this is normal.
ALL of my others are doing quite well and parameters are normal. So I guess we are in the same boat

Does yours constantly show signs of shedding? Is it open or is it shriveled up?

Mine sure looks like it is dying. Shedding and shrinking.

When I first got it(11-3-2010) there was a waxy appeareance to it which shed off after about 2 day's. After that all appeared normal and opened up with "feelers" that came out during the lights on schedual. About one week later the waxy coating returned and the toadstool started to shrival abit. (the waxy coating never shed). So far this has lasted about 2 weeks....interesting the last couple of days the top seemed to have a bit of darker algea growing on it. Now its just starting to shed off in the middle and show some signs of improvement.
It wasn't looking good at all for the past 1.5-2 weeks I just had to keep reminding myself they are tough as nails and this is normal. The only thing I did was normal stuff....place it on the sandbed and leave it alone, change the carbon filter, new phosphate absorber normal water change schedual and watch the parameters. Salinity=1.025 nitrate=2.2ppm phosphate=0.2 alkalinity=3meq/L calcium=400mg/L magnesium=1300 PH=8.4 temp=76.
ALL of my other corals have been thriving and the toadstool is just starting to show some signs of improvement after I thought it was on it's way out.

It'll be O.K....just ignore it and in a week or two you'll be surprised by how good it looks...as long as your water quality is good just stick it under some bright lights and let it be

Are you running carbon since you mention other softies? Also, is it firmly secured in the tank? As others have said, it is probably just getting used to its new home. It won't be long and you'll be asking how to frag the darn thing. Mine has gone from a 3" top to about 7" top in 1.5 years. Just incredible how the darn thing grows.

I have a reefer friend who got tired of his and he just ripped it off the rock and traded it. Not long after a new one sprouted up from the left over remains on the rock.

As long as it's not melting away in front of your eyes it will probably be fine. Mine is shedding right now as well, looks like crap, but it still extends itself somewhat.

Same thing has happened to me i bought my toadstool from a buddies tank was looking great. got him in my tank shriveled up waxy shedded and i found that it takes weeks to find out if he like the new spots were i put it. Dont worry too much about parameters leathers thrive it is all about we they are placed in the tank water movement lighting and make sure nothing touches it. My stool shriveled up and it had a small star on it i removed it and it came back to normal. Toadstools go through stages there was a time that i bought a pink tale trigger for 100 bucks beautiful fish put him in and first thing he did was bite a chunk off my leather and that was it for him. Even though they are supposed to be reefsafe the leather did not open for a few weeks. but my advice is do not give up i have had mine for about two years and i have fragged it several times and it just keeps growing. good luck

Picture looks like it's still adjusting. If you start to see pockets of tissue deterioration (holes) then I'd worry. My guess is you'll be fine.

i also have a toadstool that seemed to be doing great. lately it barely opens. all over corals are doing well. it does have some green mushrooms growing on the same rock that are touching it anyone know if that could be stopping it from coming out?

Mushrooms are semi aggressive so I would recommend separating them if at all possible. It's possible that the shroom is stinging it. Keep an eye out for necrotic tissue.

They go through the pouting stage as everyone has already said, mine also went through shinny, shedding (A few days before this pic) as it does from time to time for a few days but then it looks like this after it's done doing it's thing.
