Best stuff for 320 gallon set up?
I am very new to this hobby. I have purchased a new 320 gallon starphire glass tank. It measure 30 inch high, 34 inch deep and 6 feet long. It is drilled in all four corners with boxes. In the basement below the tank I have built a room which will hold a 120 gallon sump/refugium. I am now in the process of purchasing all of the equipment for the setup and finding it quite daunting. If I could get some opinions on what I should get that would be greatly appreciated. I want to get the best quality equipment I can, so price is not really a concern. So decisions made so far include and what I need help with:
Skimmer: Bubble King 300 external Controller: Profilux 3 Lighting: Aquaillumination LED (5 modules), should I add T5 or Halide to it? Pump: ? should be in-sump as the sump is not drilled for it, I would want two pumps in case one fails. What size and brand should I get? Powerheads? Reverse osmosis unit? Calcium reactor? Heater? Ozonator? Online vendor to get live rock, fish and invertebrates from? Any suggestions of reputable firms. PAR meter? Thanks |

I'll start by suggesting on your RO/DI system. This is the one I purchased and couldnt find a better option for the price http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/...us-system.html

First off - awesome tank.
IMHO - Lighting depends on what you want to occupy your tank. But a tank that deep will probably need 250+ watt MH's. I don't know that LED's will get the penetration you need. On a tank that size you will probably want a closed loop circulation system. In order to get 10x turnover in your tank you would have a torrent going through your sump. I have a 180 and I'm running a .14 HP pump through 1-1/2" pipe in a closed loop to get the circulation. Get a good RO/DI unit with 75 gpd output, bulk reef supply has a great unit. Also my recommendation would be to set up a mixing tank that is plumbed in-line so you can mix up your change water and pump it in without having to haul 5 gallon buckets. I have 2 Koralia 5 magnums on one side and one on the other (low) hooked up to the controller that alternate on/off cycle. On a 6' tank you might need more power to get good circulation in the middle of the tank. I don't run a calcium reactor - I use a dosing pump with a 2 part mix. That is a matter of preference and what you are going to have in your tank. Lots of good posts on the various options if you do a search. Run multiple heaters on a controller - titanium would be my recommendation. 2 in the sump an 1 or more in the tank. Redundancy here is important to avoid failure. If you are running all LED's your tank might need more heating watts, my tank is mostly heated from pumps and lights my chiller runs as much as my heaters. I don't have an ozonator, I do have a ocean clear mechanical filter with a UV sterilizer. I only run the UV occasionally though. I got my rock from fosters and smith and about 100 lbs that my wife already had. That's my 2cents to start out. |

for a good portion of the rock, i would use dry rock from marcorock or BRS. then seed it with a few pieces of actua "live" rock. you'll save a ton of $$$ going that route and they can do custom orders fo larger pieces for you, just tell them how big or your tank size and maybe idea for aquascape and they'll get you what looks best and determine how much you need. both have really good customer service. i just purchased some of the marco rock for my new setup. very pleased with the quality and price.
