Its really blurry, so I can't really tell. Makes me think of a sponge, but is it moving around the tank or stationary?

Still think its a sponge. I would say its safe in your tank other than possibly growing fast. Watch it for the next few weeks and see how fast it grows.

Have not seen sponge growing on the sand. Is this a trick question? Looks like a dried epoxy glue

My thought was that it broke off of something (while growing it was black?) and now sits in the sand dying. But I didn't want to say that until we see if it grows.
