Quarantine Tanks

Hi i am new to reefing and would like to find out more about QT tanks.

1) Does copper kill off bateria? If it does whats the use of cycling in the QT?

2) Which is a better option in removing ammonia? A) frequent water change or having a cycled tank?

3) How often should we do water in QT and how do we know when to do water change?

4) Should all fishes be hypo to remove ich since some of the ich cant be seen at all. Or during the QT of about 1month if no white spot appear can i say the fish is ich free?

5) Could you guys share with me your pictures and what you have applied in your QT thanks!

thanks all for your advise!

Did you read the link? It's a great site. I'd suggest read through it, and if you still need more clarification, then ask here.

1. copper kills off inverts like pods and bristleworms. Im not sure if it kills bacteria but i would hard pressed to say that it does. To be safe use cuprimine by seachem. it is alot milder than other coppers and should be alright.
2. A cycled tank wont have ammonia. it may have nitrates, but never ammonia.
3.I would say 10& every week is a good number. if you arent sure whether to do a water change or not just test your water for nitrates. the lower the number the better your water is.
4. If you are using copper there is no point in doing hypo. it is one or the other. some people proactively treat every fish they get, some dont, its a personal choice.
5.sorry got no pics, but im sure if you use the search function of the forum you can find some.

1. Products like cupramine supposedly do not kill off the benefical bactera.
2. IF, and that's IF, you have ammonia, the usual recourse is frequent water changes until the ammonia is undetectable. A properly cycled tank should not have ammonia.
3. I do once a week 10%, while keeping an eye on parameters. Increase voulme and frequency as needed to maintain params.
4. I had fish in my tank, the most recent addition had already been in and healthy for 6 weeks, before I saw white spots. So, observation for up to 6 weeks failed to show the Ich. I now QT and treat all my fish in hypo of 1.009 for 28 days before introducing them to my tank.
5. Here is my hyposalinity thread: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=1892446

IME i find this untrue to a point.

in an emergancy cause i did not have a QT tank(which i now do cause the story im going to tell you).

Anyways one of my fish got the ich faster than anticipated. LFS told me their is a natural way to "cure" it. (i know i was nieve. learned my lesson)
Tried that for a while no results.

the fish was laying on the bottom breathing really heavy and it was east to tell it was stressed. lost all color and not eating.(from beting the most aggresive eater in the tank)

i did about 2 hours of research on copper to help.

i then removed all inverts and sold them back to the store.

then added copper.

about 4 days later after doing it how the bottle said(seachem cupramine) the fish was swimming and eating again.

once treatment over i began copper removal.

i used fresh carbon. Changed about every 4-7 days. i also used seachem cuprisorb.

i currently have 5 turbo snails, 1 brittle star.

so it can be done as long as you take the rpopper measures after that. dont get me wrong i will not dose the DT again like that. But if you have to i would say do it.

the bacteria will be fine. i ran a 55 gal with no skimmer and copper for about 1 month till ich was "gone". boiload was not to much to handle.

The thing with ich is that you don't have to treat your DT under any circumstances. What you do have to do is remove ALL fish and QT them. This removes the host cycle of the parasite. If their is no host, then the cycle is broken. It takes about 6 weeks to completely destroy the cycle, but at least you don't have to sell your inverts or go through the trouble of filtering and WC to remove any copper compounds.

I know I am either a ticking time bomb or extremely lucky, but I don't QT my fish. I tried QT'ing two yellow tangs and each one died within 2 days. I wanted to QT them because tangs are succeptible to ich and I was worried about them. After the second died, I said the heck with it and didn't buy another. I temp and then drip acclimate and then put into my tank.
