Refugium or No?

It's funny. I've been looking at the TOTMs and very few of them actually have a refugium and their tanks are AMAZING! with mature colonies of SPS. Am i missing something here? Do you need a refugium for your tank to be successful?

Please let me know what you guys think.

No, you don't need one. That being said, I find it easier to maintain my tank with a fuge & dsb, and plan to continue. I'm also thinking about putting together a ATS.

I'd say if you can run one...a refugium, at least 20 gallons....would be beneficial to any tank. That and when it matures...you can get a mandarin. Who doesnt want a mandarin?

But no, it is not a necessity.

I have to pass on voting, because the vote is both choices. You don't need one, but they're very helpful. Just like most of the equipment in this hobby.

I have two tanks, a 35 gallon and a 20 gallon long. Both have been setup for more than one year. The 20 long has a refugium and the amount of algae that grows in the display tank is super minimal and it is loaded with pods. I have always had problems with the 35 gallon. I am currently building an overflow for the 35 so I can put in a refugium! If I were designing a custom system I would definitely include the largest refugium/live rock area possible.

Fuges are good but I didn't have enough nutrients in my tank to keep chaeto growing, I have just live rock in my sump now instead and use GFO/GAC.

I run one. When I was building my tank, I had a custom sump built and I figured it's easier to add/have one in the beginning as opposed to trying to add one later. if I don't like it with macro algae, I could always use it as a cryptic fuge.

ins some cases it can be

but just like in display if you just have yoru rock in big piles with low flow going through it, and dont either by design or via husbandry keep crap from collecting and rotting inside and underneath it the rock will just be pretty much defeating its own purpose

fuge is not necessary but is beneficial and can make acheiving a high level of results easier to acheive

the margin of people using/not using a refugium isn't that big.

Aaaaaaahhhhh fuge........ Made a mess. Don't like it one bit. Create an Eco system in my DT. DSB and every year or so I get a detrivore kit. Wanna buy one barely used.

No Mandy. I just never seen one survive in a little tank like mine anyway. I'm just saying!

I think most of us have sumps, and it's just way too easy to add a fuge, and there are certainly benefits that outweigh any neg IMO.

Does anyone add live rubble rocks in the sump? I added rubble rocks to the sump and i've noticed a lot of detritus build up where the rocks are.

I am real big on fuges. I have been using one since my early days in reefing. I took my fuge off line for a few weeks to clean, rid myself of CCA and replace sand bed. My no3 has always been undetectable until I took the fuge off line. A few weeks with no lights and no chaeto growth made no3 go up to 5-10ppm. I have LR rubble and 2-3 lbs pieces of LR in my fuge.

I have rubble in my fuge, no sand. A year ago I moved my tank and flushed all of my sand through a strainer and removed all of the "chunks" from the sand and this became my fuge bed. It's 50%+ shells. This rubble collects alot of detritus and was probably a bad idea in the long run. Every month I remove the rubble and flush it with WC water until it runs clean. This upsets the pod populations but since it's only a small part of a multi tank system the dragonetts dont suffer from food source loss. I am planning to remove the fuge for an ATS. I'll keep my skimmer either way.
