Need help asap!!!

This morning i woke up to a burning smell. I went to the fish room and my heater took a crap. The heater was burnt and now the water, rocks and sand has a smokey smell. Unfortunately all the fishes did not make it. Now I dont know want to do with the rocks and sand. Anyone know if the rocks and sand are reusable or not?

=Any Help is much appreciated=

I don't see why they wouldn't be. Why did the fish die, did they get too hot or shocked?

What kind of chemicals are in heaters, most are only sealed metal heating elements.

Not much in the way of chemicals in a heater so you should be okay with the rock and sand.

you could run some carbon to remove any smoke smell or whatever. But I think you're sand and rocks will be fine with regular tank maintenance.

If you don't mind.. what make/size heater was it?

A dying heater is one of my most feared forms of tank failure. At least with parameters and such you have some control. If a heater decides to crap out... it does it on it's own terms.

Yeah I'm concerned about this as we all should be. It's unfortunate to lose captive specimens, but this can be dangerous to human life and home. Does anyone know of a comprehensive review of heaters and the various types available to the hobby?

Carbon and a water change will remove smell quickest. To be honest the oldest most reliable heaters I have seen- if properly cared for- are the old hang on the back ones. I have a guy with a freshwater setup that has one that is at least 30 years old! But in reality- the ebojager is a good middle of the road generally reliable heater. With your nickname I figured you would generally post in the cephelapod section!
