a sump doesnt clean the water. a sump allows you to add things to your system like: additional water volume, chaeto, a skimmer, live rock, more water flow, top off, helps with water changes, adding chemicals, etc.
its an extension of your display tank but gives you easier access to things and adds additional benefits to your system. hope that helps. |

It gives you a place to add most all of your equipment, allow you to have more rock and some macro algae to help reduce nitrates in a system. Having a sump more or less cleans up a display tank from having heaters and suck being in plain view.

Look at a 40gal breeder its a great size. a sump is not needed on such a size tank. the price of 40 VS 75 is about a good 2000 saved or spent.

thanks everyone for the help i guess its not as much as an eye sore then. i really dont know what size tank i want either... what is the difference between a 40 gallon breeder and a regular 40 gal? the sump adds water volume to stabilize everything better but how does the heater work in the sump? heats the water then shoots it back into the tank? thanks again

To Reef Central yes. Even amphipods can make it from the fuge in the sump up to the display tank (dt). You can also create a 'rdsb' [remote deep sandbed] in the fuge to augment and back up your dt sandbed. Increases stability, and decreases likelihood of tank crash and any need for a filter of any sort. I recommend at least a 30 gallon fuge for a 50-75 gallon tank. The brand I use is Eshopps.
