LR/dead rock question
I have a lot of dead rock from an old tank that has been dry for awhile now. My new tank should be here soon and to start the cycle should I just clean off my old dead rock and place it in the tank and then just add a few small pieces of LR from my LFS to seed it? This would seed my substrate as well right? I have dry aragonite sugar grain sand.

The live rock will seed the dead (dry) rock. I always recommend getting a scoop of sand from your LFS as well to seed the sand but its not necessary.

i have the exact same scenario- what if the dead rock still has a bunch of crap on it? no way to get it totally clean> just leave it and let it start the cycle? instead of adding fish food or a dead shrimp?

Clean it as well as you can and throw it in. Brush it really good and do whatever you have to do. I think you are right, the die off should start the cycle.

I've setup a few tanks with dead rock seeded with a few pieces of LR from the LFS without the use of shrimp or fish food. The only thing I would do with the dead rock would be to scrub off things like the dead sponges, and let the tank cycle. I think if you leave too much on the dead rock, your cycling time might take even longer.
