Tank temperature?

What do most of you set your reef temps too? I was thinking like 78 degrees? Could it be lower? Also would it be fine to have a heater that is a little too large for your system, I have one a titanium heater attached to a controller so I wouldn't think it would cause a problem, but I'm not sure?

thanks

Mine ranges from 76-78. My corals seem to close up a bit if it gets any lower.

The search button seems to only work half the time and I wanted to ask the question about the heater as well so I figured I'd throw it in there.

I keep mine at 80-81. Things seem to grow faster when the water is warmer.

Just curious, and no disrespect intended, but how can you be in the hobby for 3 years, have almost 2000 posts and are just now asking this question?

I keep mine set at 78 BTW.

hahaha it's okay I don't blame you for asking that question. I knew the general temp range, I just kind of wanted a general idea of what most people were keeping their reef tanks at. I haven't had a tank running for awhile now so I just wanted to make sure I have everything right for when my new tank arrives.

Thanks

I like 80. I think everything likes the range pretty well, the fish, the inverts, the corals. I think that the pinks and purples grow fastest at this temp. My system fluctuates from 80.0 - 81.4

Anywhere from 76-86 is fine.

Ok I am new to this hobby and I have a 75 gallon reef tank. I have my heater set for 78degrees and for the most part my tank is at 78 but by the end of the day it creeps up to almost 80. Is it bad for that kind of temperature fluctuation and if so how can I control it? I have tried leaving one of my glass lids open during the day, I have tried having a fan in the cabinet with the sump and I still seem to get that little spike.

I don't know the link to the original post, but there was a very good discussion on temperate fluctuations and there was some good arguments for allowing it to fluctuate. From what I understand fluctuations are fine, even up to 80.

My temp gets as low as 77 at night and 81 during the day. I used to worry about temp but nothing has gone wrong because of temp so I don't worry anymore.

Fluctuations are fine. It is more natural. A reef doesn't remain at a perfect set temp day in and day out year round. As the weather changes so can/does the temp on the reef. Ocean upwellings can bring cold water pouring over the reef etc. However this is not to say let your tank swing from 65-85 degrees daily even though most inhabitants could survive those extremes for short periods. A stable temp is just one more thing to reduce stress in your tank but a 2-3 degree swing is fine. I run my tank at 80 and it stays within +/- 1 degree all day. Chemical processes happen faster in warmer water (i.e. metabolism--growth etc.) however warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cooler water.

I have two heaters one in the main display and one in the sump. My reef tank has a full top with insulation --- aluminium on both sides with a few round holes cut in the hood for ventilation for the lights. It stays fairly close to 80-degrees with no bleaching.

Your choice !
