Bean overflow?

Hi. I would like to ask a question about the Bean overflow system if I may? I am trying to design a 240-180gal SPS tank. I am planning on a coast to coast overflow with 1 2 inch siphon 2 2 inch overflow's and 1 2 inch safety. The sump will be a 80X18X30 built out of a Koi pond liner. The sump will be located in the basement with the display located 12 feet higher and 35 feet horizontal. The pump I am looking at is the Reeflow Hammerhead I should get around 5000gph flow at the display. My questions are how wide and deep do you think the overflow should be? Can the Bean system handle this much flow under these conditions? The return will go through a manifold that is 2inch to 8 3/4inch outlets. Questions, commits, thoughts, complaints and criticisms welcomed. This is my first build. Thanks for the help.

I would caution you against that much flow through your sump. Somewhere around 5x tank volume should be plenty...up to 10x if you really must. 20x+ is pretty excessive IMO. You would be better off with a smaller sump turnover and add auxilliary pumps (closed loop or powerheads) for circulation within the tank.

Thanks for the reply. If I may ask? Why is that much flow through the sump a problem? I was trying to limit the number of power heads in the tank and I don't know how I would be able to put in a closed loop. Thanks again for your help with this.

I know this is going to sound crazy! I cant find a way to put a closed loop in. The display will sit 6 inches off the floor. Then 20 inches to the top of the cabinet. From there is the TV and components. Will be a great look but tough to build. But this leaves me with now where to put a closed loop. Unless some of you have a idea? By the way I have 5 kids youngest is 2 so I spend a lot of time in the floor if you know what I mean.

Go to beans home page. On there he has a siphon flow calculator. IIRC, 1" pipe with 1' of drop can hand 1000+ gph of flow. The bean with 2" pipe with 12' of drop will laugh at your pump.

the closed loop doesn't have to be under the tank. It can be in back or side.

help me out. is coast to coast overflow across the entire back of the tank into an overflow box where the bulkheads/drains are located?

The bulkheads/ drains will be located in the wall behind the tank. The tank will also be visible on 3 sides. If I did put in a closed loop it would have to be in the garage or every thing would have to go through the sump. The thing that scares me about the closed loop in the garage is heating the water up. Alabama summers can be rough.
