replacing heater

Hi Sorry about creating a new thread about this, I have been looking over the past few days and cant seem to find an answer.

My aquarium is roughly 140 gallons and a 40 gallon sump. I currently have two fluval m300. My problem is that the two heaters only heat my aquarium to 74 degrees. I need my aquarium up to 82 degrees. without the heaters my aquarium is 68 degrees.

So I am going to the lfs today and need to know if two 250watt ebo jager heaters will perform the task?

When I had my 215 Reef I used 2- 250 jagers in my 50 gallon sump. I kept mine at 78-79.

I would use three 200w Jäger heaters. That way if one goes out, the other two will maintain an acceptable temp. If one of the 250's goes, you will not hold temp in the winter on one 250w.

I run three 200w Jagers off Ranco controller on both of my 200 gal systems and keep one spare to service the six heaters.

thank you all. I ended up getting (2) 250w and may end up getting one more 200w down the road. I did take the fluvals back to petsmart. The fluvals seemed decent but the eheims seem so much better just by feel and looks. I should be getting a controller for these in the next couple of weeks.

Again thank you so much.

Richard.

Well by my standpoint the two eheims at 250watts are better than the 300watt fluvals. Temps with the fluvals maxed out at 74ish degrees. The eheims have brought the watter temperature upto 79 degrees in 19 hours. So far very happy with the efficiency of these.

Ok so I woke up today and checked temps and my coralife thermometer was reading 82 degrees. I thought "nice".

The eheim were turned up all the way and were off so I started getting suspicious. I went and grabbed an oral thermometer from the medicine cabinet and checked my temperature... good, then checked the aquarium 92.5 degrees. yikes. Looks like the fluvals were fine. Lesson learned. oh well, I do prefer these eheim's quite a bit more anyways.

Time to go shopping for a new thermometer any suggestions?

I use a laser thermometer for my tanks. Point at 1 tank, get the temp, point at another, same thing. It's great. It's great when heating my water change tank too.

Why do you want to be at 82? I keep my tanks in the 76-78 degree range and they seem to be just fine. I just don't know if the higher temp is more optimum for growth, but I figure lower temps mean lower electric usage.

Thank you sbabs.

The higher temp will only be temporary. Later I will lower it to 78. What brand is you laser thermometer? I dont know much about them so I guess I have something new to research.
