Quarantine Tank Help

Hi all,

Im setting up a quarantine tank to combat Ich in my DT. Main question is can I use dechlorinated tap water and IO salt to set this up or do I need RO water?

I had an extra 30 gallon sitting around so this will be the QT. I will be using a Marineland penguin 350 GPH filter and a 36" T-8 for the lighting. Besides the heater and a couple PVC tubes what else do I need?

Also, correct me if I am wrong but I need to bring this tank up to my current DT salinity and then slowly decrease the salinity to about 1.008-1.009? After about 8 weeks and no sign of Ich they should be good to go?

Yes you can use conditioned tap water for your QT. Drop your salinity to 1.009 in 48 hours.

you should be good with that equipment. I don't think salinity needs to be that low. 1.019 should be fine.

30 days in QT and they're good to go.

Treating ich in a quarantine tank, like the OP is doing, requires lower salinity for the hypo-salinity to affect the ich. And they'll need to stay in there for 6-8 weeks for the display to lay fallow and the ich cycle to break.

Agreed, 1.019 is ineffective, hypo should be run at 1.008-1.009 for 4 weeks, display tanks should be empty for 8 weeks if they have had fish with ich in them.

I used tap water + conditioner to fill a 55g then waited 24-48 hours, but the daily water changes are with RO water.

That's correct, but I recommend finding some detailed instructions. The trip back up to normal salinity must be done carefull and slowly.

Excellent how to and more by Sk8r
