Is it unhealthy if my cleaner shrimp sheds?

It's called molting, and it's perfectly normal.

I freaked out too until I read a post on here. After the fact though it made sense cause even crawdads in our creek do and a trantula I babysitted once did too. So I felt kinda silly when I thought about how I reacted to my shrimp. Ive learned alot from the members here on rc.

It won't hurt in the tank either, but I would remove it myself, I have heard about some reefers varnishing them and keeping them for ornaments, well I'm not sure if that is true though LOL.

I've kept the shell of my Anemone Crab and my Pom Pom Crab after they molted. Luckily the shells stayed intact. It was the first time they molted in my tank, so as a little victory for doing something right I kept the shells! But, yes when my Pom Pom molted (about 2 weeks after I got him) all I saw was the shell and I freaked that he died till I saw him moving around and laughing at me.

Leave the shell in. They can come back and eat it or other critters can eat it to build their mineral levels.

I woke up this morning and thought my hammer coral ate my cleaner shrimp. All I see are antennas sticking out of the middle of it. I look a little closer and I see the tail. The lights were still off in the tank so I couldn't see real well. I'm thinking, no way could the hammer eat a cleaner shrimp but I'll admit I was a a bit nervous. After looking around a bit more he was hanging out under a rock in the back and he had just molted like I was hoping. But dang that was scary for a second.

I like to add iodine to my tank, Iodine helps inverts molt. Only dose a small amount though.

Iodine should not need to be dosed unless you don't keep up on your water changes. Don't dose anything unless you test for it. Dosing is a headache. Don't do it unless you really need to. Easy to screw something up.

I notice that some salts dont think have enough iodine. And if you have a lot of shrimp , you will need to dose. But i only do half of what the bottle says.

Here is a quote from one of the great chemistry gods!

And that was from this March...just some food for thought.

The only things i ever dose to my tank are cal, alk, mag, and a little iodine. from articles that i have read and from my experience i think it does help. When you are using salts like IO, i dont believe there is enough. I also keeps lots of shrimp in my tank
