18 gallons sump with 90 gallons tank????
Curently I have a 55g but this weekend want to upgrade to 90 rr that’s sitting in my kitchen. I have an 18 gallons acrylic custom made sump with fuge that is full of pods and don’t really want to mess with it.
My question is will 18 gallons sump be ok on 90 gallons tank? Do you think when I loose power it will overflow? I also don’t want to put anything bigger and heavier because I live on second floor of a duplex and there is always the thing on the back of if the floor will hold it |

That's e pretty small sump. But it can work. Just make sure you have enough room for backflow. This means you'll have to have your return pretty high in the tank. I would use the returns mainly for surface agitation. Siphon breaks and check valves can work. But proper room for backflow ALWAYS works.
I usually like my sumps to be at least 1/3 my DT volume. So a 29 gal would be good. Just because the sump is bigger, doesn't mean it will be full all the time. GL.

I run a 40g sump on my 90.. my friend runs a 29g on her 90.. But I think 18 is a bit small..

You prevent backflow and flooding np with the forementioned methods - however my concern with such a small sump would be storage of all your filtration and other equipment (skimmer, reactors, fuge etc).

I run a 10 gallon sump/fuge on my 55 gallon tank and my fuge is doing great! granted I have a hang on skimmer and my heater is in my DT....also my return is close to the surface to prevent backflow. bigger would be better but thats all the space I have so it works for me
