1 side overflow in a 6ft 280g?

my buddy has dual internal overflows, each on his side glass, on his 72x30x30 280g.

its 1.5" drain and 1" return in each overflow, however, the overflow box is only about 6"x6".

he wants to remove 1 of the overflow box. i told him that wouldnt provide adequate skimming, but i dont know much about overflow's.

opinions?
