Panther grouper tank Advice Needed.
hey guys,
i am only new to the forum and am currently setting up my first tank however am not new to the hobby due to working in a marine aquarium for many years. I just have a quick question regarding my cycling tank. i have set up my 60L tank to house my new panther grouper (put aside at work) for a few months until the little devil grows bigger then the 5cm he is now, then my 500L tank will be his new home. In the mean time, the 60L tank is currently cycling with only 3.5 kg of live rock purly for the cycling process, i dont care about keeping the growth on this rock alive long term - The tank is cycling very quickly, details below.. 21st April - tank was set up with live rock 22nd April - no obvious change in water perimeters 23rd April - 7:30am nitrite reading of .25, ammonia and nitrate 0 23rd April - 10:45pm all readings are 0 24th April - 8:45am-current, ammonia =.5, nitrite = 0, nitrate = 5-10 so by the looks of the water, the cycle is running quite well. with me off work until wednesday, i thought i would just ask you my question is, once the cycle is completed and my annonia, nitrate and nitrite are all displaying a "0" reading, i am thinking of adding a green chromis for 24-48 hours, just to experience the very slight "secondary cycle" then i will take the chromis back to work and replace it with the barra cod, this way there should be very little if any variation in my water parameters when this animal is added. do you agree?? secondly, will i continue to experience ranges in nitrite, ammonia and nitrate even once the cycle is completed? - i ask this because i am saving my money for a light on the 500l tank and not bothering on the 60L, therefore in theory, the remainder of life on my rock may continue to die..even once the cycle is complete...am i right?? thanks everyone |

your live rock will be ok without light, but algae will die off.

the absence of light shouldn't effect any water parameter issues. The dieing off of algae shouldn't be anything more than your regular water changes and a bit of carbon or protein skimmer can handle.
