Unusual Dilemma that Needs Attention!!!

guys, i have decided to upgrade my tank to 30 gal and use my 10 gal as a sump. need your opinion on my new project, im thinking of digging a 3 feet deep hole, 1 1/2 width, 2 feet length and place tiles around it. bottomline im contructing a pond which will make my water colder. any thoughts on this? your opinion is very critical and essential.

You'll be putting the sump in the hole? If so why so deep? What'll go in the sump?

You will initially get some cooling, but after a short period of time, the constant temperature of the water in the sump will heat the surrounding soil and only give you minimal cooling.

Not sure how the 'pond' would be used. Whats the plan?

It may be easier to set up an array of fans over the sump.. when the temp rises, blast the fans across the water. Evaporative cooling is very effective. Just make sure you have an auto-top-off to replace any water lost.

Any controller can turn on the fans when you hit a temp threshold and turn them back off when the temp goes down. ATO wise the same controller would work, or something simpler like a JBJ device.

I'm not sure what you hope that will accomplish. What you need to do is find a good home for all the stuff in your 10 gallon and go learn how to care for marine animals. You have so many other more important things to worry about right now. Re: your other post.

That sounds like a good idea. But dont line it with tile. Leave it open for about a week or two. Then as the 7 or so fish in your 10 gal tank start to die you will have a place already for them.

What if he re-routes a cool mountain stream through the pond?

How about; If you've made a 'new to the hobby' mistake, like many of us have, and bought the wrong fish/too many, consider returning them or upgrading your tank size.

Digging a hole isn't a great idea, if it was, alot of people would have sump holes under their house. Subterranean sump search result = 0.

Maybe if you buy a bigger tank, you can add a chiller.

Maybe you could point fans at your sump, esp. at the water surface. Like the cheap clip on fans, or some computer fans. Computer fans can be wired to old mobile phone chargers. Downside is, evaporative cooling = more topoff.

None of us has made this kind of mistake. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=2012216

I'm still on board with the mountain stream idea, nobody liked it?

None of us has made this kind of mistake.

We haven't, but you reckon no one has?

Benefit of the doubt. Dude, have you mucked up or you mucking around?

Post a picture of your tank/fish so we can help...and a pic of your hole/piping.

Well you're right, it's a really big world, but people have told him what to do and he hasn't replied. If it's true, all these animals are dead now: "essential info: tank 10gal, 1month old, temp 82F, skimmer resun SK-05, actinic blue light, under gravel filter, overhead filter, 3 live rocks, 1 brain coral with worm attached, 2 maybe goniopora coral, 1 bubble coral, 2 unknown corals , 1 clam, bunch of sea grass, 2 percula clown, 1 maroon clown, 1 garden eel, 1 blue fin damsel, 1 golden-head goby, 2 turbo snail, 1 bumblebee snail, 1 boxer shrimp, and 1 powder gray tang."

to clarify, im building a pond to make the water cold and not to place a sump inside the hole. i hired a guy on monday to dig a 3-4 feet deep hole and cement it around then tiles over it. im going to upgrade my tank to 30-40 gal customized shape. my 10 gal tank will serve as my sump. if i buy a chiller then there's nothing into it. no challenge at all. i don't want to be like everyone else. im asserting more effort and thoughts to this hobby unlike the others. lets wait and see. ill post some pics when its done and ill keep you guys posted. i hope i prove all the people against me wrong. lets see who has the last laugh.

I don't really understand this. Are you building a pond that is 30 gallons?

If your in it to have the last laugh, you are gonna kill a lot of animals. I hope you succeed, for the well being of the animals. It's not about proving anybody wrong.
