Resiliconing and old tank?

Hey guys,

I had a few questions about the proper way to resilicone an old tank. I have a new to me 75 gallon tank. The silicone between the glass panels is fine. However, the silicone around the internal portion of the tank has gotten beat up and scraped into by its former owner. As such I am uncomfortable with using the tank before I attempt to fix the silicone. However, I want to do this correctly and have a few questions.

Should I take the entire tank apart, risking breaking it, and resilicone everything?
Should I scrape out all the internal silicone, leaving the silicone between the glass completely untouched?
Should I do something else that I haven't thought of?

Additionally, those that have information on the proper bead width for the silicone on a 75 gallon tank, if you guys could pass that along I would greatly appreciate it.

Finally, please keep in mind that this is NOT a discussion about the type of silicone I plan to use. I am going to use Momentive 100 Series silicone. I have already purchased it and I believe that between its excellent material properties and its FDA certification it is a proper choice.

I hope others can learn from this post as well.

Go with 2 and it should be fine. I did on a 110.

You can keep it pretty narrow if you want. On the tank that I built the inside seal is only a few mm. It only serves to help protect the seal between the pieces of glass which are structural. If you tape the seams first you can control the width and keep the edges very straight.

Remove a side and corner at a time, re-silicone it then repeat to the next side and corner. It helps to tape, in hopes to keep it all together while your working. Its not easy... IMHO
