Cleaning Live rock into Base Rock?
I've heard different methods on cleaning Live rock into Base rock and was wondering where you all stand? What methods do you use: Boil, Acid, Bleach and Dry? I got the live rock from someone who took down there tank and was throwing it out but its covered in all kinds of bad algea most of it dead but probably not all of it...

Boil / heating I would not do, chance of toxic vapors or irritating steam from things in the stew. Bleach kills any organics left on the rock, algae, worms, etc. Acid will dissolve the actual rock.
I've always soaked for a few days in bleach water, rinse well and air dry for at least a few weeks. But I was never in a hurry to use the rock so I had time to let it sit dry. Some tap water dechlorinater can speed the process. |

Thanks Bluecoast, I'm in no hurry so I'll probably do the bleach method. I don't want to risk inhaling toxic vapors again...did that once and I was sick for 2 days.

IMO, if you have the time, an acid bath is the best way to completely clean the rock. It also helps remove contaminants such as phosphate that may be bound in the rock. There are several threads on RC that contain the proper method for using acid to clean rocks.
Here is a good thread that discusses the difference between acid and bleach when used to clean rock. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1587539

+1 to Barfly's response. When I was cleaning the rock for my new setup, I bleached the rock for several hours (~15% bleach solution), rinsed 3 or 4 times, and then did an acid bath (~15% muriatic acid solution) for about 20-30 minutes. Worked great.
