If Vortechs are worth the money I still have some questions:
There is another thread titled "Is the Ecotech MP40wES REALLY worth the $??!!". In this thread the general consensus is that they are. I've been looking at purchasing used ones and the fact that they sell very quickly for a large percentage of their original purchase price bears this out. However, I've noticed a couple of things that give me pause.

A lot of people are upgrading to MP60's and selling their 40's. I know that's not all of it, but I think that has something to do with the sudden spike in MP40's for sale.

My three mp40w have been in constant operation for nearly two years. I have cleaned the wetside once. Havent had any issues. Actually gonna buy the mp60, two mp40 on the back. I love em, and once you add the price of a controller to the other brands pricing is very close. Now let me knock on some wood.

I was the same way and I think I made the right decision by not buying an mp40. However, I did buy the Mp60, I am extremely happy with it, this pump is freakin sick.

vortechs are they way to go! I'm still running the original blue driver mp10 in my BC29, but haven't had a problem with the wet side.
As for them being listed for sale a lot, the reason could be several such as: upgrading, downgrading, or getting out of the hobby (which has been the case for several people)

I've had my MP40 for 2 years and haven't had to replace the wetside.

I have had my two MP40w es now for well over a year on the one, and about 6 months on the other. So far other then cleaning the algae off with a tooth brush in the tank i have never had an issue with the wet side. The pumps run great, and are full of features.
I think the main differences in the two pumps, or should i say the deciding factor is that the vortechs are not directional. But believe me they move so much water they don't need to be. JMO

The reason that you see people having to replace the wet side is because no one posts when they do NOT have to replace a wet side. They only post when there is an issue. There is only one wear part in an MP40 wet side and that is the drive shaft. This shaft can have to be replaced anywhere from 1 year to never depending on how you run your pump. It is a very cheap part and a very easy replacement.
I upgraded tanks and have gone from a 24g with one MP10 to a 75g with 2 MP40wES running in anti-sync and My fish, corals, and I couldn't be happier. |

The ceramic oring will also wear out. Another small part of the drive shaft can swell for unknown reason to me. These parts are cheap to replace. Most of the time ecotech will just send u one for free.

IMO, they are very good/reliable, but, overpriced!
If you can find a used one...get it!

dont like how you need all ecotech units and not just a master. im not sure if they do that on purpose or not.

I've been around countless aquariums and all sorts of pumps and lighting schemas and everything in between the most expensive aquarium to the least.
I can say that in my experience, the type of pump has little effect on coral health and growth. Maxijets, stream pumps, vortechs, mag drives (yes, I've seen this)...as long as your corals are getting some good flow, I've seen the corals over the years flourish in any setup. The key has been routine, diligent, quality maintenance.

Over priced NO! The level of customer service I have recived from the is pricless. One of the best compaines to take care of their product and clients. I have 10s, 20s, 40s, and 60s. My own tank has two 60s and I replaced my Tunze streams and wave box. Much less stuff in the tank and easer to dile in. My first 60 had an issue on the wet side on the second week it was up and they quickly sent me a replacment and a prepaid UPS lable to return the deffective side. They realy take care of you.

I have 2 mp40 soon mp60 as far as equipment in reefing they are good as advertise, you cant say the same thing about many several big money gears in our hobby. SPS loves it, fishes loves it especially hard to keep tangs.
