Aqua Medic T5000 Baby 48" Skimmer

I recently acquired one for a really good price.

I did some searching didn't come up with much.

Anyone here have experience with one? or its bigger brothers the Single or Twin?

I will be super cleaning it tomorrow and getting it plumbed up.

Adam

those arnt real popular for the "normal" hobbiest. but i remember reading where a guy was using those (they make a larger one) on his green house frag tanks. (it has been a few years back though)

let us know how it works for you

I run the t5000 single and love it. it replaced a delta ap851 when I decided replacing the little pumps was getting old. Been 10 years and have never wondered if it works, always has a baseball sized head at the top and the cup is plenty big enough. Ive bought 2 more used over the years and am really sold on the idea that the extended dwell time makes for a more stable head. It literally starts pulling stuff out every time i scrape the glass or feed that tank instantly. I think the main reason not a lot of posts is that due to the height they are best for dedicated fish rooms. I just have mine behind the tank and the feed pump to the skimmer is my return pump so its really not all that bad from a power draw standpoint. Mine is currently on a 177 gallon tank with about a constant 30 gallons in the sump. rated for 900 + gallons, largest reef Ive used it on was a 480 gallon sps dominate tank. the design with the tall cup and not so wide mouth really allows it to be used on smaller setups or large tanks. I grew up with downdrafts and becketts, then a schuran 200 and a deltec a p851, my newest tech would have been the ati meshwheel bm 200 when those first came out around 2007. If you like to fiddle with adjusting a skimmer its not a good choice, its more of a set it and forget it, just empty the cup every few days and thats really about it. The impellers for the or pumps are less than $10 and i think im on impeller number 2 the first one lasted about 8 years.

I have the Aqua Medic 5000 Turbo Shorty on a 350-400g system. I direct feed the skimmer by gravity from the 180g reef tank. it's been in use for 4+ years and I've had no issues. In fact my other system (only about 125g) has had several different skimmers and none of them have worked as well or been as easy to clean as the 5000 Shorty. The Next Reef skimmer on that system is the best one so far and it's almost as good as the Aqua Medic.

Here is the latest Aqua Medic T5000 with the new Eco Runner pin wheel pump.
It produces more air but you still have alot of contact time
Check out the video.

they are actually pretty good skimmers. I've seen them produce some nasty nog.
