Porcupine Puffer tankmates and diet
I currently have a 6-7 inch porcupine puffer. what types of foods would be good for him? he has been eating frozen krill. occasionally clams, silversides, and goldfish. also what other cool fish could go with him? box or cow fish? i wanted to put a spiny box fish and a long horned cowfish with him. and possibly a trigger? any suggestions on food or cool fish would be great. thanks

I would cut the goldfish out of his diet. My Porcupine just absorbs krill and Mysis. I have a Black Trigger and a Blue Throat Trigger with it, and no problems.

Mine like silversides, squid, well really just about anything. Cut out the fresh fish though, really no nutrition or value from them.

Get rid of goldfish, offer occasional hard shelled animals, like fibbler crabs.

frozen uncooked prawn, from the seafood section of your local grocery store, mine devours frozen muscles as well and he loves crushing the shells to get to the meat. my grocery store also carries a frozen package of seafood mix that contains squid mussels(without shell)shrimp, octopus and clams that my puffers and most of my other fish go hog wild over

Keep in mind that over feeding krill can cause porkies to get lockjaw

simplified explanation... the jaw locks in one position therefore preventing the fish from ever eating again resulting in death from starvation... krill aka puffer crack is highly suspected of causing lock jaw in most / all types of puffers not just porcupines |

Krill is kind of a maintance food till you get him eating other food. I use it to jump start a puffers diet really.. I get them knowing the hand brings krill, so they come to the hand, I feed 2 krill then throw in a silverside, then 1 krill then a squid.. all of a sudden, they are coming to the hand and eating what ever it gives.. which is no longer krill but everything else.

I think a 125 would be to small for a puffer spiny boxfish and longhorn boxfish. IMO

Doug actually feeds his fish better than most people eat. FWIW, the trouble with krill is that many peeps use it as a staple once they get their fish eating, which is where the problem lies. Krill is not only completely void of Vitamin C, but their shells contain inordinate amounts of fluoride, and finally, their flesh contains varying amounts of the enzyme thiaminase, which inhibits the uptake of thiamine (Vitamin B1). What this amounts to is malformation of the mandibular structures of the fish as they grow, which can result in lockjaw.
