foxface ID
I was getting some water at a little hole in the wall pet store in my area and i saw this beautiful foxface they had. The price tag was 89 dollars which might be a little pricey but it was nothing short of spectacular. Can someone tell me what the deal is with this beauty?
It had a red line at the top of its fins and normally the ones that I see are just about all yellow. Thanks. In addition, When setting up a QT tank, will there be some sort of cycle. If I set up a 29 gallon tall tank bare bottom with saltwater from the LFS, a few pieces of PVC pipe, a powerhead, and a HOB aquaclear filter can I just plug and play or do I have to do the whole cycling process again?

they had it labeled as magnificient but I thought that was because it was so good looking haha. Probably gets too big for my 4x2x2 120 gallon huh?
WHat about the QT?

Yes, Deffintanly a magnificent. No it gets as big as a regular fox face. i had a regular one in my 90 gal. and he did jest fine the only thing the watch out for is there fins. they are "poisnous" and it hurts (or so ive been told) so jest wash it with water if you get fined. you should get it if u like it.

Yep, hes a magnificent. We got ours about 2 months ago and he's just the greatest. Super chill, my clownfish loves him, eats from my hand... I could go on.
And a pic of mine. He had a bit of extra color in this one. It's amazing the colors he can change to. His sleep colors are so neat... Last edited by JennyH; 07/26/2011 at 08:55 PM. |

So I just get a tank and set it up. Fill it with salt water. Put a few pvc pipes in there for the fish to hide in. and run a HOB filter and then the fish is fine in there. I just treat with cupramine and prazipro as directed on the bottle and then move the fish to DT in about 6 weeks correct? I'll throw a powerhead in there of course.

BTW, which LFS had that fish? I've seen Magnificent Foxfaces for well over $100, so I don't think that's a bad price at all.

Nice fish. It's a Siganus magnifica. Grow s to 9.1 inches ,a bit larger than the usual one spot foxface ,Siganus unimaculatus, which grows to 7.9 inches.
Yes, a qt tank needs biofiltration and time to cycle unless an adequate bofiuter such as seeded sponge material, etc, kept in the sump or from an existing filter is added. Monitoring ammonia in qt is critical. Having some Amquell or Ammo Lock or another ammoia detoxifier on hand in case of an ammonia spike is helpful. But don't use any of these in conjunction with copper medications.

I do have some sponges in the sump but I think they are serving some kidn of purpose in there. I'm not exactly sure what that is as I'm still figuring out the whole saltwater thing. I found the fish at a little hole in the wall pet store near the oceanfront and their saltwater tanks looked really well cared for.

That is the one fish that I really, really regret not leaving enough room for in my tank.
