Hardest time getting a Peacock Mantis Shrimp
Hey guys,
I usually just read the forums as a guest to get all my information but I have come to a dead end in my situation. I have been looking for a Peacock Mantis Shrimp for almost 2 years now. I have called every store in Arizona and have left my contact info with them. Then, for the past 2 weeks I have been calling California, Nevada and Florida shops and even they are out of stock. Checked out most of the online vendors and filled out the "email notifications". Is there anybody out there that has a Peacock for sale in Arizona or out and willing to ship it to me? If anything, I would appreciate any information to a source where I can obtain one. Thanks in advance, Rob |

I called fishsupply 2 days ago. I was competing against a guy who worked there to get the only Peacock they have had in 3 months they said. Talked to Christine and she said an employee bought it. So, I am working at getting one. Thanks for the hook up though.

I found one, too bad it's 1,952.3 miles away from my house and they don't ship. V.I. Pets Plainfield Grand Rapids, MI. 4 1/2 inch. Don't know if it's a "true" Peacock but it might be worth a look for someone local. The quest continues...

I just got mine from a LFS in Huntington Beach, CA. Another LFS has one currently in Fountain Valley, CA but they told me that he is missing an eye...

haha I just figured out that fish supply is the same store as my LFS - I had paid for and reserved for my o.scyllarus from there over a week ago. I did not see any other peacock mantis shrimp in there either. They said that they do get them consistently however so just keep trying. I guess I was lucky.

Worry not, it's not a Peacock. They had the below image posted on a local forum. Looks like a G. Ternatensis to me. Too bad I'm on the opposite side of the state from Grand Rapids, I might have picked it up. |

Goodness... 2 years? I found one in one afternoon earlier this week.
Check with all online vendors, get on the email lists or w/e Liveaquaria.com ibluewater.com (where I got mine) vividaquariums.com reefs2go.com etc etc. With a little persistence you can have one in no time! |

Yeah. I didn't even try locally lol. I asked my favorite lfs and they said there was 2 on the list before me and one had been for a few months already. ibluewater.com seems to be able to get them. I paid 145 shipped for a large o.s.

Well, I found one but I'm not looking for a "large" Peacock. Plus I can't justify paying $125 to get it here. So if anyone is interested, here you go.

I've seen Pets Inc have Peacocks on hold from people. They have them on hold for people pretty often. Call and ask for Andy or Kirsten.

Err, I've seen at least 5 there in the last 6 months. Are you sure you are ID'ing these properly? I've only ever seen one NON-peacock there in the 2 years I've been reefing or so.

ID is accurate. I currently have an O. havanensis. I've had O. scyllarus in the past. I'm actually going to Pets Inc later today to pick up some stuff. Of course I'll check for a peacock, like always. Maybe when you're in there and see one, you could shoot me a pm? I should get the email notification on my phone. I'd appreciate it!

Here's the scoop I know about the last so called "peacock" that came out of Pets Inc. About 2 weeks ago I saw a listing for a Peacock Mantis Shrimp on craigslist. So I replied and talked to the guy. He said he got it from Pets Inc. He told me everything about the sale. Date, person, etc... He got the so called "peacock" out of his tank cause he had to move it and took some pics. I received the pics and was like "hummm". Gave Andy a call and he remembered the guy and the mantis. He told me that they labeled it as as "Peacock mantis shrimp" cause they didn't know what kind of mantis shrimp it was. I'll post the pics so you can see. I'm trying man, I really am. I think Dr. Roy is keeping them all to himself, lol. That's a joke Doc!

For those that are wondering. Here's a pic of my baby girl now playing peek-a-boo. She likes to hang by the side of her tank throughout the day and watch whats going on in my SPS reef tank beside hers. She's quite the character! I'll start a thread if there's interest to see more...

I'm going to have to come over sometime to check her out. Not many people locally are into mantis shrimp it seems. I've tried over the past year an insane amount of times to get reef culture to buy them but they say because they can't trust the ID on their end, they don't want to bother.
My Ternatensis is just starting to warm up to me now and actually comes out when I come over to tank. Only a head usually, but he knows for sure me = food. |
