Other skimmer options

I'm looking to upgrade to a 120 mixed reef. Other than Reef Octopus, what other skimmers are out there? I'm looking for a skimmer rated 240 gallons or larger.

plus 1 on the skimz line, and dont assume that you need a skimmer rated for twice what your tank is,

I always heard 2X the tank size. Is this a myth then? I will have a heavy bioload since I plan on having a few larger fish (maybe 1 tang and a foxface).I also will have 2 clowns, 1 possum wrasse, 1 McCosker's Flasher, 1 Lawnmower Blenny, and a Mandarin Goby, and 2 blue chromis.

Also, where can I buy Skimz skimmers and what size is really recommended for a 120 medium-heavy stock- what models are preferred?

Tagging along, I have the same size tank, and looks like you are at where I want to be.

lolgranny- I was looking at the 250 as well but I just want to try something new. I like the Skimz SM201 model now that I'm looking at them. The price is comparable to the Reef Octopus but it looks like it takes up less room.

I don't have this tank yet, just getting an idea of what I want before so I can make a budget.

It depends on the skimmer. I know that Reef Octopus claims they rate their skimmers, especially their Super Reef Octopus line, accurately. Furthermore if you oversize it won't work as well as the neck on an oversized skimmer will be too large to efficiently remove organics from the tank.

I know SRO suggests the SRO XP-2000 for my 120g DT with 40G sump. A sales rep told be directly that he felt the XP-3000 was too large for my tank and they only suggest that on tanks over 180g.

With skims I have been split between the SK181, SK201, SM161, and the SM201 and since they are new it has been hard for poeple to give a firm reccomendation.

less room is always a plus! Im basically like you, taking it slow and getting ideas so i figure i would tag along for ideas. im not set on anything. I currently have a bubble magus NAC6 on my 40g breeder which is about 50g total with the sump and that thing is rated at a 120g with a heavy bio load. Its not producing much skim anymore because its a ULNS, but if there is anything i rather go larger on its a skimmer. Ive always had better luck with bigger.

Really? I was looking to oversize a skimmer too by using a bubble magus bm-nac 9 on a 40 then moving to a 120 if or when I upgraded. Is this not a good idea now?

I would also like to know if that is a FACT.

I do not and never have bought this argument. Plus, I don't really hold much confidence in the mfr tank-size ratings. They are always pretty random.

I have an ETSS 1000 with a Panworld 200 on my 300gal actual water system. By some measures this is grossly oversized. I have constant thick black foam skimmate.

As long as the skimmer has a properly sized pump, when there is skimmate to skim it will take it out. You may have more collection on the neck than in the cup, but it is still waste being removed from the system.
