Sump sounds like a waterpark

So, after installing my first sump (not on saltwater, a fresh (for now)) i realize that i cannot run my pump (rio2500) to full power on my reef ready 95 wave without it making a insanely loud gushing sound every 2-3 seconds, like, my entire house sounds like a water park. the only thing i can do now is to make my pump TRICKLE water into my tank, any advice?

Move next to a water park to drown out the noise? You could install a ball valve & adjust your flow with that. I love that sound BTW, soothes me.

At first I hated the sound, but it is growing on me. It made it a lot better when i put a prefilter on my overflow to stop it from sounding like a toilet though. Now i just get the sound of the water pouring over and the quiet hum of my return pump.

If it's making a loud gushing sound every few seconds (like a toilet flush), it's because the drain is going full siphon. Once is builds up a siphon on the drain, water moves down it a lot faster than just from gravity, so it sucks down the water level in the overflow until the pipe hits air, sending a wave a bubbles down the drain and breaking the siphon, then slowly it builds a new siphon and keeps repeating the process over and over.

A durso (or other means) will keep this from happening.

thank you all for the advice! i think i already have something like a 'Durso' it is a pipe coming from my bulkhead that is in the shape of a durso, the only difference is mine has holes in the top of it. that is where the gurgling sound is coming from, should i plug it?

My dursos do the same thing when the holes in the top caps get clogged. Take a toothpick and clear them out. Worked for my noise.

Make sure your drain line is submerged below the water level of your sump. This will help to lower the noise and keep the water moving more smoothly in my experience.

+1 on the ball valve on the return pump. i had the same problem and when i tuned the flow and the height of the intake tube. sound is there still but not as loud. i like it now with the trickling water sound. at first it did sound like a high school kid trying to chug a beer bong lol but now with the ball valve in it works like a charm

Just a side note on the ball valve, don't put one on the overflow side. That makes flooding more likely.

My skimmer makes all the noise on my 125. The external super reef octopus xp-2000 is a beast!

Nope, don't plug them. Get your hands on a small air valve like the ones that come with a maxi jet or similar power head, and a small length of airline tubing. Put the tubing on the little nipple on top of the durso, and then plug the air valve in. Adjust the air valve until the surging stops....if you can't get it to stop then you may need to slow down the flow from he return pump or enlarge the hole on the top of the durso.

sounds like your air holes are plugged or possibly too small. I dont think you are getting enough air into the pipe to break the siphon. Watch and see if the water level in your overflow area changes. If you are getting enough air it will stay the same depth. If you are not the water will rise, then fall rapidly and make a loud slurping sound as air is being sucked into the pipe when the water falls below the intake. This is probably wher your "water park" sound is comming from.
