55 Gallon Build
Hello:
I am documenting my 55 gallon build to see growth and to use as a reference in the future. Right now the tank is in the process of being drilled for a box center overflow and a 10 gallon sump with 1 filter pad and a sock. Equipment so far: Mag 7 Aquamaxx HOB-1 Skimmer Aquamedic 6 bulb t5 contoured individual reflectors Stand Refractometer The tank is going to start as a BB and I will see how it looks from there. I entend on keeping SPS, LPS, and Soft Corals. Possible stocking: Yellow tang and leopard wrasse/3 anthias Here is the ten gallon that this will all be transferring out of to start with- it is only 5 months old with a clownfish, ywg and shrimp, LEDs and 8 corals. 0822112158-02.jpg 0822112158-01.jpg 0822112158-00.jpg 0822112202-01.jpg 0822112159-00.jpg |

Alright, I get the tank tomorrow and I will set it up with the stand and lights but it won't be plumbed yet. I will upload pics tomorrow but it won't be filled probably for another 5 days? I have never done an overflow myself so the plumbing should be interesting... I am excited though and all the corals in the 10 gallon will be as well for some big lights versus the 80 watts of power compact with LED supplementation now. I will probably not have a refugium I decided because there will not be enough nutrients. My question is this: what should I run in the sump? It has a filter sock but thats all and the protein skimmer is HOB. I could make it into a frag tank with some LEDs I have or whatever else you do in a sump?

Sumps are great for storing any equipment you want for your tank but wouldn't want to see in your display, such as heaters, probes, protein skimmers, auto top off, or dosing lines. Also they can be a great place for, like you have, mechanical filtration (filter sock), but also biological filtration, which would be like Live Rock Rubble. I would agree that you should leave a refugium out of the sump, the space left in a 10 gallon used for a refugium is too small to actually leave a measurable impact on the tank, your better off just filling the rest of the space not taken up by equipment with live rock rubble or nothing at all. You could possible make the extra space an area to harbor frags, but that would require proper lighting, water flow, and timing of the lighting, but in theory i could easily be done.
