I learned something today... (bulb selection)

My LFS is awesome and has given me ALOT of excellent advice since I started in this hobby.
That being said, I will never take his advice on bulbs again!

The past 8 months I have been using his recommendation
He recommended UV bulbs
2 75-25 bulbs (15,000K)
1 Aquasun (10,000K)
1 super actinic

Well I have been thinking my corals just look so dull once I get them home and into my tank so I started looking around on here and asking.

I was recommended the following
2 ATI blue plus
1 ATI purple plus
1 KZ new gen (15,000K)

I got the bulbs in the mail from Reef Geek today, (super impressed with the packaging BTW) and installed them.

I would like you guys to see before and after pics I took with my phone yesterday and today. These pics are of a new Richordea Rock I picked up last week.

The pic on the top is the old bulbs and the pic on the bottom is the new combination.

The real test will be if I see an improvement in growth.

OK, a follow along question:

What color temperature in Kelvin or what wave length in nanometers is best for coral growth? I'm putting 2ea 150w 10K MH, 2ea 250w 14K MH and 1ea 250w 20K MH over my mixed reef. Any thoughts?

I ran the same combo on a 70g sps tank and everything grew very well. I've tried just about every bulb and thats the best combo ever for me.

Wow, the new bulb combination looks great. Probably makes the tank feel ike it is in HD and more enjoyable to look at. I think the LFS's suggestion might not have been in the direction of what you were looking for. Aesthetics are important and no matter how great the growth might be, if the corals don't "pop", it might not matter.

what's the "true"olor of the ricordia, reddish green or greenish purple? That's my question? Which bulbs produce the natural color?

Corals get more out of a 10K.
But it really depends on what you like ... A 10K is white as you go higher in K the more blue the light running radiums (20K) you lose par but you get a sweet blue. I prefer using a 14K phoenix bulb cause they give a good blue and high par. It also depends on your ballast (electronic vs magnetic) an electronic ballast doesn't fire at 100% so the bulb will be more blue.

______________
I must say your corals really pop under your new bulbs
