Difference between cree xpe and xpg

So I'm planning on making a purchase of leds. I decided on going the diy route since it will be way cheaper. Now, I just need to figure out what leds to get, xpe's or xpg's? The xpe's are only 200 for a set of 48 meaning it will only cost me about 300 for all my lighting! I understand the trend is people buying xpg's but then having to dim them all the way down. So is there any difference in the two leds except for just the brightness? Because if the only difference is brightness then I could just run the xpe at full power and it will just equal the xpg brightness when ran at half power.
