I know this has probably been asked a million times but on water temp what is a safe window to keep your water temp at. I know on all the big internet order sites it says 72-78 for everything but how warm is too warm. My tank stays between 84-86 and I know that is pretty warm. everything seems to be doing pretty good with the exception of my frogspawn. It is bleaching out I think, probably cause of the temp. As i'm sure this is WAY too hot what are some good ways to cool it down?

I keep mine at 78*. Above 86* is considered deadly.

I try to keep mine at 78 degrees.....to cool it lower the amount of time your lights are on (if possible) you could also have a fan blowing on the surface of the water. What i did was i put some of the tank water into a water bottle that i washed out and put it in the freezer then once it was cold i put the water back into the tank (this was for my small 20gal. and also it had no fish in it as it was cycling so it may not work for you as it may shock your fish and inverts) You could also go buy a chiller....im might buy one too

86 is pretty hot. You can do a lot with fans. If you still have the glass cover on your tank, you could get rid of it. Fans work in your sump too. Evaporating water cools. So you can take advantage of that. I don't know what lights you have but maybe they can be raised a little? I had a return pump that created a ton of heat (got rid of it) Touch things and see what is getting hot.

+1 on fans, getting rid of cover if you have one, and raising lights

78 then up to 79 during the day(still trying to work on the 1 degree increase) using a 1/4 chiller and 2 6" fans that blow on the water while the halides are on

Thanks for all the advice. The tank doesn't have the lid on it, never put it on, and I tried raising the lights today and didn't work. Thinking maybe the location of the tank in the room and the sun coming in the window probably has a lot to do with it. Boat guy, thanks for the touching stuff thought. Haven't even thought to check the pumps in the sump to see what may or may not be possibly heating up the water. I'll let you know what I find.

Hey Boatguy you would think that after all the years of keeping fish tanks that I would think to look at the heater if things were too hot, of course I have a MH that adds to the heat mix now, but, I felt around and the stinking heater was set for 77 so shouldn't have been on when the water was just about 85 degrees and the stupid thing was REALLY on. Burnt my hand when i felt it. May not be the absolute problem but surely one of the biggest

I keep mine between 78-83 depending on the time of day or year. 86 is not deadly. What's more important than a specific temperature is how fast the temperature fluctuation occurs and if your corals are used to some temperature fluctuation. My tank once hit 90 overnight due to equipment malfunction and I had no fish or coral loss. With that said I aim for 78-79 but don't sweat it if it goes a little above that.

Fill up some plastic bottles depending on size of tank and freeze them. I have a 75 that was hitting 86 degrees, once I put the frozen bottles(three 2 liter bottles) in the tank the water temp went down t0 80 degrees within 2.5 hours. Put the bottles back in freezer till needed again. Never did need em lol.

Well after a day of watching the tank after taking the bad heater out and putting a new one in the tank never made it above 77.8 degrees. Had the MH's on for four hours and the tank was rock solid!!! Stupid heater
