Until you loose a tankful of growing discus worth around $500 you might not see the need for a controller + heater combo. ...

Think about it: of all the electrical things or equipment you use in a fish tank, what is the piece of equipment most likley to fail, kill and endanger the owner: a heater

then you go out and invest the least amount of money "relative" to the cost of the livestock you have in the tank; with acans, acros & fish costing upwards $75-$100 "per" ....
if you got more than $50 worth of livestock in yoiur tank, don't get a cheap heater...

as for brand: if saying I think my 1st heater was a Metaframe gives me a lil cred then my recommendation is a Ebo Jaeger or bust

(although for space reasons I myself will be buying a Titanium heater, but I also got a Apex to back it up)

I've had a Jaeger running flawlessly for 15 years in one of my FW tanks

I didn't even think about buying anything else for my SW setup

I really like the Aquaclear/Hagen heaters. Pretty much everything they put out is a quality product IMO. From heaters to HOB filters, powerheads, lights etc.
