RKL + Koralia nano

I've been looking a lot at adding flow to my upcoming JBJ 28, and had been looking at the Vortech MP10. However, I've decided to go with a koralia evolution nano 425 and an RKL, so I can get the wavemaker function, as well as a host of other beneficial features. Plus, I can mount the koralia on the back wall of the tank next to the two return pumps and not have to have the excess hardware on the wall of the tank. My questions are, will this be enough flow, with the stock pumps on the Ocean pulse duo and the Koralia 425 on the RKL? Am I making the right decision in whats best for my tank?

John

What kind of corals will you want to keep? For SPS, there's no such thing as too much flow till water is jumping out the tank and frags are cracking of their plug.

I want to do a mixed reef of softies and LPS and maybe a few SPS. Of course the SPS wont come untill later down the road when I have some experience keeping up with the tank. I'm also concerned about that much flow bothering the livestock I want to put in, which is a pair of O. clowns and a goby of some kind, maybe a pygmy wrasse to top it off.

I have a 25g cube and I put a koralia nano 250 in it and didnt see enough flow so I added a aqueon 500. The 500 started slowly pushing the sand off the front glass and while trying to reposition the flow of the pump the ball joint broke off. The 1 pump should be enough but you might want to consider getting a pair of pumps to give more control over flow, plus with a wavemaker 2 pumps allows you to mix up the flow by having 2 on or each on independently.

I do have two other pumps, they're the stock return pumps that are on the Ocean pulse duo that came with the tank. Any other comments on too much/too little flow? Good idea to use this one koralia nano 425 on the RKL wavemaker function?

Something to keep in mind if you put the powerhead on the back wall, if by some chance that magnet ever falls into the back chamber it is a ROYAL PITA to fish back out.

Ask me how I know.

I wondered if you'd find this thread John! Any experience with the RKL as a wavemaker for this powerhead? Also, any comment on mixing softies with LPS and SPS?

Sorry my RKL is still in the box waiting for my 60 gallon shallow to get up and running.

That's alright, think I'd have any problems with the mixed reef I'm planning? I still think the RKL is worth it for the other features it comes with.

Just remember that the rkl pc4 outlets all put out power even in standby mode. The koralias will only standby in outlet numbers 1 and 4. I think that effects wave mode to?
My tank has 48x gph flow, I don't think you'll have to much flow. My pair of clowns don't mind it.

So I just need to run my koralia in either outlet 1 or 4? And good to know about the flow.

I have 2 nano 425's in my 29g biocube (for now.... just purchased MP10). It's a decent amount of flow, however I would not qualify it as "a lot".

How does the RKL manage making waves? by turning on and off the powerheads? I'd think this would put some stress on the Nano(s) and greatly reduce their life. Mine virtually stay on 100% of the time. I have an Apex controller that shuts them off for a few minutes while I feed, and when they turn on there's a significant (in my opinion) physical jolt to the Nanos.

A couple things to think about:
The best tanks I've seen had controllers, even if simply for piece of mind. 2: A mixed reef with that small a volume is gonna get tough. I'm in the same boat with a new 40b and when I cranked the flow sps love it and softies are cursing me.
3: I think you are fine until you go sps. Then you'll
Kick yourself cause either softies or sps wont grow full potential.
