Dwarf Angels anyone?

Do you CURRENTLY have dwarf angels in your tank and how long have you had it/them? Any interesting behaviors?

I have a Flame Angel in my 50 cube. He's been a model citizen so far (no nipping at corals), but I've only had him for 6 months.

I've had my Dwarf Flame Angel fish for about a year now. He's awesome. He leaves my 2 Anemones and Flower Pot Coral alone, but sometimes he tries to steal food from my Sebae anemone but my two clowns keep him in line. He's constantly on the move. He hardly slows down to eat. Getting a good picture of him is damn near impossible.

Here we go;

C. deborai, have had it for about 10 months -- only aware of 2 others.

Venustus dwarf -- had it for about 14 months now, pretty mellow and will hang out upside down from time to time.

Flame -- lost the smaller one when I moved.

Coral Beauty - been about a year now.

Lastly, multicolored, about 9 months now.

Dwarf Pygmy/Cherub

we have only had ours for about a month now, bounces all over the tank...He did get into a scrap with the clown(?) and got tagged on his right side (big black spot). All better now and they swim around each other peacefully. He does like to nip at the rocks...

Todd, Love that C. Deborai, you should be proud! I have an Eibli, Half Black, Coral Beauty & Flameback Pygmy, all in a FOWLR, they don't pass my trustworthiness test for a Reef. Always nipping.

Thanks for all the replies. Beautiful angels Todd! The reason I am asking is because my LFS advises against getting some dwarf angels, flame, potters, bi-color, stating that they dont last beyond a year. I was bummed at first but thought let me see what RC has to say. I want to add a bi-color and a flame angel to my paired ocellaris, clarkii, and chromis.

IME Bi-color, Lemonpeel & Midnight Angels all fit into the "dont last beyond a year" category. Don't ask me why. But I've had long-term success (3+ years) with CB, Flame, Flameback, Half Black, Tibicen, Pygmy & Potter's Angels. ALL are hit or miss when it comes to coral nipping though. But the worst is that damn dwarf Yellow Angel, the one that looks like the Lemonpeel but without the pretty eyes.

I don't agree with that in applying to a flame angel, but potter's and bi-colors can be tricky. It seems with Potter's that they are kept too warm, and bi-colors have always been touchy for some reason.

What size tank?

I would be more nervous about the Clarkii taking out the O's -- they are pretty darn aggressive.

Planning ahead -- trying to mix a Potter's and a Golden angel (( which I tried )) most likely won't work, since they are so similar in coloring. Using an acclimation box helps, I have kept a dwarf angels in there for up to a week so that the existing ones gets used to it. Also, it will allow you to know if it isn't going work and remove the fish without any troubles.

You have to be willing to break down your tank to remove one if it doesn't work out -- easier said then done. Also, will need to have someplace to move the problem child too.

My tank size is 110g. The O's are hosted by a huge condy, its tentacles can reach 4-5in when fully inflated. The Clarkii is hosted by a Sebae on the other side of the tank and facing the opposite direction of the O's. All three have been together since they were juvies, every now and then they have their standoffs but nothing ever happens.
Was it difficult having two Flames together? Did they show agression towards eachother? I never thought about two Flames but after seeing your pic it I like the idea. I love angels, can I house three in a 110?

My flames came as a pair, but if you can find a male/female (( with the female being smaller )) it shouldn't be too hard to pair up -- though be prepared to intervene. You might be able to add a 3rd dwarf, depending on what type.

Male flames have pointed anal and dorsal fins (( at least I am 95% certain it is the male )), whereas the females are rounded -- can see the difference in the picture above.

The male is the larger Flame in your pic right? They are hermaphroditic so if I get two small Flames will one become a male and the other a female? I was thinking two Flames and a Coral Beauty, Potter's, or a Flameback.

I was wondering the same thing myself. My reading online so far has suggested that if you get two that are very small you have the greatest chance of pairing them. I have also read that have a good chance buying a larger fish and small fish and the smaller will become female. It seemed to read that the smaller the small fish the more likely it would become a female. I am hoping to put a pair of Coral beauties and a pair of flames in my 180G FOWLR A tall order for a beginner, so I could use advice on this as well.

Nick
