Clownfish

I bought a 14 g biocube and it just has a pair of clowns. The guy said they were mated. Is there anyway to tell if they are, to me they just hang out together because they are the same kin, but how would I tell if they are mated and where can I go for information if they are?

Clown fish adjust their sex to suit the situation. The larger is the female, the smaller is the male, and some fish have been known to be both papa and mama in successive matings. 14 gallons is not big enough for them, unfortunately. There's likely to be a fight as they reach maturity. Right now, if they fit in a 14, they are babies.

What type of clowns?

Did he have video/pictures of them spawning? That is really the only way to tell, there are no outward signs of it.

Agreed. They are eventually going to need a much larger tank.

Is the larger always the female? After reading I found that almost everywhere says that the female will be the larger of the two clowns... so I named mine with that in mind. However, I've noticed the larger one doing the "mating" dance where it just kinda twitches infront of the other one... This makes me think that the smaller clown is actually the female. Is this possible?

I suppose it's possible, I have a pair of clowns too, and they are my absolute favorite reef fish, but they never did the "dance" for me

But I agree with sk8r..... your tank is going to get too small

Hey, don't worry about it, that's the best excuse to upgrade your tank IMO

Best of luck with those lovely fish

Ivan

The fish are probably an inch and half and maybe two inches. They are percale clown fish.
