Which Hydor Koralia for my 100g

I have a 100g tank, 48L x 24W x 20H, mainly SPS, one clam at the bottom. I'm currently running one Tunze 6065 and two 6045. I felt Tunze’s current is too narrow and I don’t see much movement at the bottom. I'm thinking about replacing them with Hydor powerheads. I like the broader stream Hydor produced.

I'm running shallow sand band, using "Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand".

I'll like to place one on each end. What is the best one I can have without creating a sand storm? Thanks!

You can have the biggest Koralia you want provided that you don't point it at the sand. That is the sand I use in my 75g. I have 2 MP40wES turned up to 100% at times and I get no sand movement at all.

2 1400 Evos is a good start. You can put um' on a timer. I have a 125g 5' tank with 3 1050s and 2 1400s all on a wave maker. Good flow throughout !!

How are the newer koralia's? I bought 5 of the originals a while ago and now only one works. They were not too reliable. I heard the newer ones don't use a shaft somehow. Is this true and are they more solid?

Here's my $0.02:
90g mixed reef tank with oolite sugar-sized sand, I started with 2 K4, then Evo 1400, now MP40ws

K4s
1) cannot be on wavemaker, startup issues and can run backwards
2) pain to put together due to the twist-on of the front cover.

Evo 1400s
1) wider/broader flow compared to K4
2) can be put on wavemaker (I had used my RKL), mind early batch productions of 1400 which had startup issues. Hydor issued free part to correct, a gasket I think.
3) easier to take apart and put back together for maintenance
4) yes, impeller and shaft are basically one piece, no seperate metal shaft.

Note that for a SPS tank, you may need 3 Evo 1400. You can start with 2 and see how it goes. As far as blowing sand, no issues if you partially have them aimed at the surface.

With that, I just finished cleaning/prepping a 1400 for storage. PM me if you're interested in it.

I never had problems with my older k4s. I still have them and they work great. Like Red said.. these "cannot be on a wave maker". The new Evos work well on any wave maker. You can't lose the little rubber stopper on the front grill or they will reverse start constantly !!

Thanks a lot for everyone's input. I'll probably do 2 x Evo 1400 and use those Tunze I have to supplement it if I have to. I may not do anything yet until after Thanksgiving. Once I make the change, I'll post my experience.

I have the older K4's and the newer evo 1400's, and i actually prefer the older ones over the newer ones. The flow is much wider and more spread out. I only use two on a LPS/SPS 125 tank.

I have a 75 gallon mixed reef tank. I started with 2 evo 1040's and didn't feel it was enough. Recently I added an additional 2 evo 750's and am pretty happy with the flow.

I think your idea of keeping the tunze and adding 2 evo 1400's sounds like a great plan.

I just received two new 12 volt K3's with the controller for my 120. Works great. Wide or narrow flow depending on the attachment. I like the way they alternate back and forth. Have them at opposite sides of the tank at about 3/4 power.

Yes, I have 1 Vortech on the end blowing across the tank and the 2 Koralia's on the back wall. I like being able to point the Koralias where I need to.
