Setting up new 100G Reef

OK, first off, way new to salt so please be gentle. :-)

I have a 100G tank that has two bulkheads drilled in back upper corners. I am putting as large fug/sump that I can fit under it but am a little confused as to how to plumb the overflows. Previous owner just had two 90 deg ells facing up and a slight angle. Noticed when we seen it running it make some huge noise and would like to avoid that. If someone has the patience to give me some advise I would appreciate that. Plan on overflow dumping into first section of sump, with skimmer, then thru bubble trap to return section. Return line will have valves to divert some of the return water back to final section of the sump with is the fug, which then will return thru another set of bubble traps to the return section. By everything I have read, it looks like this will allow me to better regulate the flow thru the fug. Again really new so all help is vaulable. Thanks in advance.

I'm about a year or more from setting up my 150 gallon, but I'm basically going to be doing the same thing.

How I am going to plumb mine though is a little different.

I'm going to have the left overflow go completely to the protein skimmer side of the sump.

On the right overflow, I'm going to put in a "T" and a ball valve to direct 1/4 of the flow from that side to the fug and the rest to the skimmer side of the sump. This way, the flow in the fug is much slower.

I'm building my own sump out of a 55 gallon glass aquarium, and I'm going to have the return in the middle. (skimmer on the left side, fug on the right).

I have mine set up with the return splitting into two drains with a ball valve on both sides. I limit the flow to the refugium to the right and have the drain to the skimmer side wide open. The return is in the middle. So far, the only thing I hear is the overflow noise and the skimmer noise. Pretty quiet. My drains are 1.5" and the return is a .75" pipe size. Here is a pic:

@port - that may be the way to go as well. I might switch up my plumbing and do the same as you and that way the fug gets overflow water as opposed to water that has traveled all that way. Also elliminates my worries about taking away some of the return pump pressure.

@rizon, that is exactly what I have envisioned. My sump/fug is going to be a 55g as I can set it up in such a way that I will have a nice large fug and increase my system capacity by almost 35g, if my calculations are on. I of course plan to run a test run and make sure all is well and the sump will hold overflow in case of pump failure.

Yes, plan out your baffle size so you have enough height for your skimmer but will also allow enough room if your pump were to ever fail.
