QT tank setup questions

What is needed for a qt setup? Can you just run a small tank with a hang on back filter box, or do you need more equipment? Should the tank be empty, or have rock?

No need for fancy stuff, hob filter, heater, and an air stone

You could put some rock or larger pieces of PVC for the fish to hide in, if you treat the tank with any medication, the rock may absorb the medication, so I recommend removing it before treating.

Is a 10 gallon large enough, and can I just pull water out of my 150 gallon to get it started?

Yes, I use a 10g for my QT, it does limit the number & size of the fish that can be QT'd at one time, but you should not really be adding more than 1 or 2 fish at a time anyway. I personally do not like using old water, very little beneficial bacteria is transferred through water, I use new water always, the idea typically behind a QT tank is to control ammoina spikes through water changes & not from a cycled tank unless you plan on keeping livestock in the tank constantly.

1) Would not recommend live rock in QT because of hypo/medications used.
2) Add a powerhead to the mix
3) Consider tank size when you have a larger fish. If you are stressing them in QT then you may not be prepared for bigger fish yet.

In my new system I'll use a 75 gallon for QT with dividers in it and two 40 gallon breeders plumbed to a sump. If I want to remove a single tank from the mix for some particular treatment then I will have that option. In total about a 175 gallon in QTs but this is all dependent on how big your system is and how many fish need to be hospitalized
