looking for new tank, need suggestions
Hey guys,
Looking to do a new DT tank in the range of 125-250 gallons (preferably long style) with a 50 gallon sump. Been purchasing the equipment for this build over time and am ready on that side of things, just need the stand, tank, and plumbing. I started looking on Craigslist for tanks bc it seems that the value is definitely in getting a used tank/stand instead of investing in new. Can't believe the price differential between a new and used tank in this size range. Anywhere else I should be searching for tank deals? Anywhere else I should be searching for stands? I'm perfectly fine and would be happy with making my own tank and stand, but it seems like this route will cost more or about the same as a used setup from the brief glass/acrylic raw material sourcing I've done online. Any cheap ways to source acrylic or glass for an aquarium of this size? Thanks in advance! -Matt

I would check your local reef forum on RC. My local RC reef forum (Southern CA reefers) constantly has great deals on tanks, stands, equipment, and livestock. Hopefully you have one in your area. You can also ask folks there where they'd recommend getting the best prices for local tanks/stands.

Check your local reef store as well. Lots of them have bulliten boards and such. My one shop has used stuff in the shop, but it is all the supremist of ripoffs, essentially 95% of new price. I told them to ef off.

Dont Know about in Jersey but I have an LFS here that runs tank sales about twice a year and the last sale I inquired upon a new 210 reef ready was going for $599 and the std pine stand was ~$325. Look around your local LFS's maybe they run similar sales.
I picked up a used 180 reef ready with pump/skimmer/sump/T5's & MH/fish/Live Rock/Sand everything. All plumbing had to be cut off and replaced but I paid $950 and there was at least $600 in fish in the deal. craigslist can be your friend. It did take several months to find that deal... But they are out there. Happy Hunting, Nick
