Why so much negative feedback on the Ecoray 60D?
I just purchased two Ecoray 60D for my new 90 gallon. I got them for $300 each. I have them mounted 6-8" above the water and they look nice to my eye (remember that I am completely new to all of this). My LFS has four of them over there 120 gallon and all livestock looks great. This is what I will eventually use for my 90. They quote very high pars but the negatives seem to be that they are very narrow. However, with 4 of this they should easily cover the whole 48" span. That being said, for 4 of these I will spend $1200. This is still considerably less than I would spend on 2 ecotechs or the AI's. I know that I don't get the controllability that ecotech or AI gives, but is that the only difference? I was reading all the negative feedback from these and starting to second guess my purchase.
Anybody else have these lights and enjoy them? Just curious |

i have 1 i got for very cheap
it pulls high numbers in a 20x20 area of a tank i have mine over 2 feet off a tank to try and spread it out with that making really no distance the fan is loud i have an AI sol on the other side of this 4 foot tank and it covers better than the ecoray60 (doesnt produce the same amount of par but it coves more area)(i am going to be taking the ecoray off and replacing it with something else really havent decided yet) does it work yes

Does it bleach your corals? Is the only reason to move it up is to try and spread it out? Just curious b/c if I have 4 of them on a 48x19 footprint then it should easily be able to cover the whole area. Sorry if I am missing something. I am new to all of this and really ignorant on all of this.
Thanks for you reply. |

I personally worked on couple of them before and have to remove some optics to make them practical but for the money spent, I can get more power than 60W easily nowadays from many brand. It's not a product that you would directly label it as "bad" but in most cases the unit is not very practical and I feel it's priced too high for the material provided.

So I have a great LFS. I went into them all nervous about expressing my concerns over the ecoray, and how it was spotlighting pretty heavy, 1w bulbs, no way to replace, etc. I wanted to return them and get something different, and they had just ordered some kits from rapid LED to put together and test out on their tanks. They told me to hold onto the ecorays as loners until they say how these rapid leds performed, and if they perform well they will help me set these up or go whichever route that I want. After researching the rapid LED kits I think this is a no brainer. A little nervous about the DIY route, but sounds like there is plenty of info out there on how to set them up. With the money I save I could probably get a neptune or some other type of controller. Thanks all for the advice on why ecoray sucks.

my lfs uses ecoray 60 and 120s and i have 2 different diy rig's from rapid led, i have to say i am very happy with my setup and by compairison i prefer the rapid led lights to the eco rays and the corals i buy from this store seem to prefer my lights to theirs as well, every coral i buy from them improves in color and size within a day or two over what it was showing in their tanks
