Major Salt Creep in sump
This has only become an issue since the winter started to kick in. I've got a Mag 7 return on my Cadlights 50G and the salt creep in my sump has been getting out of control. The drain is submerged an inch below the waterline and draining into a filter sock.
I've read it could possibly be a oversized return pump but I'm not sure the mag 7 would be considered oversized. I'm just having a hard time determining what the main reason for this is.  1) Should I put a ball valve on the return pump and see if slowing down the drain would help 2) Should the drain be above the water? I would assume the splashing would be just as bad as the trapped air bubbling. could be wrong. 3) Could this be a problem with my durso standpipe? maybe the hole in the cap is too small? I run my tank at 78-79º and my house is consistently between 69-72º. Sorry for the newb question but its really starting to bug me and I figure a couple of you have run into this before. Thanks for looking and any suggestions would be appreciated.

I got a lot of splashing in my sump as well. My drains are Herbie pipes, submerged into the water. I slip fit a 90 degree elbow on the drain, which eliminated the splashing/bubbling.
However, I do get lots of splashing from my skimmer output, so I plan to DIY a deflector of some sort to minimize the sound and salt creep. |

Do you use a sock with a plastic ring? If so,you can make an acrylic cover to cover the opening and keep the splashing I inside the sock.

if too much flow is suspected you can definitely add a ball cable on the return side. that way you can control the flow.
