I could not believe it!
Thought I share what happened to me this morning…….
I have two Green Spotted Puffers, Cleo and Homer (long story on there purchase). I have had them for two years now, there converted into fully saltwater and they have been behaving very well with the corals. Anyways here is my story…… I woke up today to find one of my Green Spotted Puffers on the floor; she was still wet and still soft just not breathing. So I got the measuring cup we use to top off the tanks, put some water from its tank and put it in there just to see if I wasn’t too late. It did nothing, no breathing, floating to the top so I decided to play doctor and give it a couple of pumps just to see if it would start breathing, but nothing happened. It was still floating to the top dead. I left it in the cup while I went to make some coffee, went to look at it after a while and nothing. It was about 10 minutes later when I went into the room and I saw that it was no longer floating, it was at the bottom of the cup. So I got closer and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw its fins moving. It was alive!!!!! I was so happy and amazed! So my project for today….cover that tank again! LOL Has this every happened to anyone before????

lucky you. A solar wrasse I used to have jumped out the tank and landed in my lap about 8 feet away on the couch while I was watching TV one night. He must have thought it was a lot of fun because he tried it again a few days later. Unfortunately, I was at work so he was jerky by the time I got home.

I used to work at a LFS. We had a large Tessalata Eel jump out while we were all out on service calls. It had been on the floor long enough that its outer layer of skin was dry to the touch in places. We put it back in the water and it was fine later that day.

I've heard of freshwater eels doing that, but a lot of them are designed to survive out of water for extended periods.
Hope it makes a full recovery. In my experience, puffers are tough to tell when they were truly close to death or just in their zen state until rescue arrives. I've noticed, especially if they puff up, there is a short period afterwards where they effectively play dead after heavy stress. |
