Maxi Jet 5500

Is this a good reliable pump ? I would like to get two of then for my 125 as return pumps. I've weighed a lot of pumps against on another and it comes down to the MJ or Mag Drive. I know MD are great and reiable and all that but the high wattage is what deters me.

I spoke with the rep at RAP in the OC last Oct and he stated that 3000 model would be a better fit for a 120 I was surprised by his answer. So going by what he stated two 5500 would be huge.

That's interesting. I'm currently running dual Hydor Seltz L40 pumps. They do a good job moving the water but I want more flow. The L40 moves about the same as the MJ 3000 so based on what the rep says I would be good with just dual 4500's instead of 5500's.

Yeah, from what I've read so far about them they seem like a good alternative to MD. I can't get over how power hungry those are.

I have both. the 3000 didn't like kalk much and had frequent restart issues to do deposit build up (a problem my cheap viaAqaa back up pump doesn't have in the same location). The 5500 is a back up pump too lol (they were selling it at the local shop for $80, I said what the hell). It is way too powerful for my tank but it is WAY bigger and more powerful than the 3000. The 3000 has built in flow control as where the big boy does not (you'll need an inline valve). I also had to buy fittings to fit 3/4" hose which the 3000 came with. If you really want to see them side by side I can take a pic since they are both in the garage doing nothing right now.

Cool, yeah pics are good. I think I'll go for the 4500 instead. You've convinced me.
