Turnover rate and pump recommendation
I used to have a 120 gallon with a Panworld PS-200 for my return (290 watts, 1500 gpm @ 10' head pressure).
I swapped the PS-200 for a Velocity PS4 (140 watts, rated 900 pgm @ 10' pressure, probably less flow than rated) and several Tunze streams. This gave me more flow for less wattage. I swapped the 120 for a 270 gallon tank. 900 / 270 = 3.33 times turned over per hour, so I am tempted to go back to the PS-200 (5.55 times turned per hour). This will cost me approximately $130 / year in electricity. The slow rate of return can also be advantageous - for example, dosing kalkwasser or doing a water change. I worry my skimmer is not as effective (constantly skimming the same water) and my heater is not as efficient (easily solved by moving my heater into my display). Should I keep the PS3, go back to the PS-200 or buy another return? |
