Maxi-Jet Replacement???

I have used the Maxi-Jet with the Sure-Flo mod on my tanks for years. I tried to purchase a couple of new ones recently and found that they have redesigned the pump and the old Sure-Flo will no longer work with it. The factory "mod" apparently leaves something to be desired as well from what I can tell.

After reading the reviews on the new Maxi-Jet I am a bit reluctant to purchase one. The noise, particularly at start-up, seems to be an issue and there are several reports that the pumps run backwards and suck water instead of pushing it. I have had enough of Maxi-Jets running backwards, since the old ones did this as well.

What are my options for affordable flow these days? These are for standard 24/7 use without a wavemaker attached. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I am looking at the JBJ Oceanstream and wondering if I will be happy with this in my 125g?

korallia and JBJ Ocean force. Korallia is a bit quieter though but the JBJs hold up well.

I have MP's on my system and just recently picked up the JBJ 1600's for my frag tank build. I got the JBJs wet in my mixing tote to see how powefull they were and they handle more than enough flow. Only thing I don't like is thescrew that comes off the swivel ball. Seems a little weak but time will tell when I finally get them up to full usage.

I've had several korallias as well and they have always been great pumps but a little over rated on flow IMO.

Either would be a good affordable choice.

Good luck and Happy New Year!

Tivo

If you want to use your current Sure-Flo mods get the MJ pumps from Cobalt, they are the old Maxijets.

I bought a brand new MJ 1200 (the old style) on eBay a few months ago. You should check there.

i never really realized how cheaply made the maxjets are until i bought on yesterday at petco. around $40. i couldnt believe it. i was putting it together and setting it up so i can use it for water changes and i couldnt believe people use these pumps in their DT. the pump literally falls apart at times since the swiveling head doesnt even lock in place that well. do you have to buy a maxjet? you might want to consider a different brand imo. or atleast look into the colbalt max jet brand.
