New setup for a salt water newb

Hi guys!

Im new to the forum and to saltwater aquariums, i plan on setting up a aquarium soon and i wanted to go over what i intended to buy to make sure im making the right choice.

Tank

72 Gallon bowfront, drilled with overbox, includes a all wood stand

Sump

Im not very handy with DIY stuff.....i can plug A into B without a problem but not so good with making my own stuff. So ill be buying a commercial sump.

Im looking into the Aqueon Modular ProFlex Sump model 3

http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/...ltration.html#

Protien Skimmer

Reef Octopus 4" Pinwheel In Sump Skimmer

http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/...p-skimmer.html

Pump

Danner Mag-Drive Supreme 7

http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/...ater-pump.html

Powerhead

Hydor Koralia 2 12v - Controllable 264 to 686 GPH

http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/...4-686-gph.html

Would this be a good set up for someone starting?

Thats it for now ill save the fish/coral/substrate talk for another time. Thaks in advance!

i would build your own sump... its not hard you just silicone in your own baffles it's very easy actually.
mags pumps are good but I would reconsider they put out a ton of heat!
skimmer is awesome.
you will want better powerheads! I run 2 EVO 1050 gph and 1 EVO 1500 gph plus my return pump on a 60 gallon tank.

if you have questions a buddy of mine owns a fish store and would be happy to explain step by step on what you need and how to make your sump.

I would consider a different sump. I have they proflex model 2 and its so skinny. It makes it very hard to do a fuge and have a Skimmer. You have to fit a skimmer and return in a small 3rd chamber. I plan on getting a trigger sump

I like this ^ good DIY skills BrianMarsh!!!

I also think you should build your own sump.

You could have $100 total in a 40br diy sump like mine.

Or you could spend $1,000 on a pre-made sump, trust me. They are

ridiculously expensive!

thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but really a pre-made sump is a wast of money
I spent like 60 bucks to make my sump I did use the petco 1$ per gallon sale for the tank.... i used glass baffles but acrylic is cheaper and easier and all you need is silicone to attach the baffles

+1 on the DIY sump. I made mine and it's not that big of a deal.
You can get a 20l aquarium from Petco for 20 bux now with their sale going on. Add baffles to it with some silicone and that's it. Sounds much more involving than it is. The baffles you can get from HD or Lowes ar any glass shop.
If you go that route make sure you leave some room for the silicone on both sides and ask the glass shop to bevel your edges of the glass(round them up). I think I left 1/16'' on each side for silicone. If you plan on using silicone make sure it doesn't have mold inhibitors in it as they will cause problems after that. For mine I used GE I I believe.

Yeah, you don't want glass from L/HD because it is single pane strength.

and it will cut the heck out of you!

IMO spend the $35 and get your local glass shop to do it and use nice thick

3/8" glass and they will automatically finish the edges for you.

3/8???

Don't you mean 3/16"?

3/8" is like this thick. | | well at least on my phone it is!! Lol

I have never built one on my own but that seems way overkill. Is it because it's not tempered like the rest of the tank?
