Maxi Jet Pro 1200 beware!

Just bought a Maxi Jet pro 1200 to replace my aging maxi jet on my AquaC Remora. Once it gets the least big of backpressure (AKA hooked up to the skimmer) it grinds and makes crazy noises! I called marineland and they fed me a line about it not being designed for skimmer and that the maxi-jet sold with skimmers is some kind of "Modified" version. BS. I've replaced the maxi jet before and it didn't make terrible noises the moment it got any sort of back pressure. What happens when the pre filter gets clogged? Looks like "pro" means "crappier".

Anyone had this problem or come up with a fix?

The new design leaves a lot to be desired. For years, I've used the old MJ1200s, with the Sureflow mod. The new design is made so the Sureflow mod won't fit it AND the new design doesn't work near as well. When used with their new propellor/housing, the housing vibrates off, easily. The new version also almost refuses to restart, when it loses power.

yes, they simply suck now, and should not be purchased.

it used to be my Fav pump, but the new pro models basically showed marineland quality !

I bought a 1200 recently to do waterchanges and it does get loud and make a grinding sound when you raise the output a few feet to the top of the tank. I've never owned one before so I thought this was normal. Would never use this for continuous usage.

yeh, just bought a MJ "Classic" on ebay. I guess I'll keep this one as a backup.

Wow... Good to know, and a shame. I'll have to hang onto my old pair. They're a couple of the most consistently reliable pumps I've had.

The new ones are crap. I have had two lock up in my tank, two not work out of the box, and they are loud! Marineland just told me i put it together wrong......

Cobalt uses the old manufacturer of the MJ, so far its going well. So look them up if you want the classic MJ's

I have mine running in a trash can to mix salt. It does grind and stuff when I power it on though. Its even thrown the shalf and the impeller out of it before when starting it up. I wasn't that pleased with it at all, but it does the job and wasn't expensive. I'll probably replace it later with a koralia or something.

+1 ... I had a old 2400 for years, but these new ones hate starting up ...worse the made sure none of the old parts fit ...I'm 100% certain it was done on purpose

That blows...MJ900 was like my favorite pump ever.

I have one that's been running constantly for 7 years on my biocube, just retired it to mixing water changes as I tore down the cube. The other one runs my GFO reactor.

Why would they change such a great little pump?Add a new product line, sure...but keep making the original!

What is this hobby coming to when you can't trust a maxijet?!?

So what are people using for a cheap pump to run TLF reactors if the maxi-jets are junk?

I have one running as a circulation pump and one to run my GFO reactor - as a circ pump it's fine but as return/push pump its loud - to the point I will be replacing it soon...

I suspect they designed the "Pro" versions to simply be circulation pumps (basically a cheaper alternative to Koralia) and not much else. They aren't bad in that regards, but they don't seem to like being used for much else.

This is what I understand also. Cobalt uses the manufacturer out of Italy that made the old Marineland. Now Marineland uses manufacturer in China.

I have a 900 and a 1200 version of the pro. Both are very loud to start with and get almost unbearable if you put any backpressure on them (like slightly closing the ball valve on a reactor)

They are garbage.

The new ones are terrible! I was using one on a reactor and if I restricted flow at all it was SO loud, easily the loudest thing in my tank. I found some of the old style online and I am happy again.

And to think there was actually a time when Maxijets were on almost every tank. I still have working models from 2002

^I think you would still be hard pressed to find a reefer without at least ONE maxi-jet in his basement or garage...if not on his tank.

Will be buying nothing but the Cobalt versions of MJ in the future. I'm so glad they still make them!

That sucks! Just ordered a 1200 pro from marinedepot to run a couple reactors. Looks like I'll be looking for a replacement soon.

I just got that same pump and plugged it into a remora and it chatters like teeth. I bought at amazon and I'm sending it back for a mag 3? Louder than y skimmer. You can hear it in the next room
