Corals to put directly on a bare bottom tank???
OK. I have a mostly SPS mixed reef tank and I recently switched to a bare bottom tanks at Copps recommendation. Loving it so far. Other than Ricordia, what are some good coral ideas to put directly on the acrylic bottom of a bare bottom tank?

Wow, just looked it up on U tube. Those are definitely huge. I had a hadoni anemone and had to get rid of it when it ate an sps that fell into it.

Look at RC's main page the TOM. I personally love how his chalice and war coral are starting to cover up the bottom...

64 Ivy, How did you get the favia to stay put long enough? epoxy? superglue? Love the idea.

I've seen 64's in person and it looked awesome! If I ever go SPS dominant you can bet I will have bare bottom with Favia and Chalice on the bottom.

TOTM has encrusting montis on BB tank...they look pretty good. I would mix it up a bunch...BB tanks are pretty ugly, but if you can't see the glass they look "ok" - so start mixing it up with a variety!!

If you soft coral on the bottom (ie, zoas, clavs, star polyps, etc), wouldn't they trap debris just like a sand bed? I thought the purpose of a bare bottom tank was to be able to use high flow directed at the bottom to keep debris in suspension so it can be removed?
If I were to put any coral on the bottom, it would definitely be either sps or lps like a favia, encrusting sps, or chalice. Dennis Dennis |

Not claiming to be anymore knowledgable the the previous post.
I wouldn't do gsp or clavs because of their ability to take over. But with z & p's, if glued down well, they can take (and like) plenty of flow and can be vacuumed if needed. |

"would anyone with SPS dominant BB tanks care to comment on if zoas and palys should be used, or will they become a detritus trap?" Last edited by pompeyjohn; 01/15/2012 at 06:04 PM. Reason: spelling mistake |

I am attempting to cover my bb tank in zoas and encrusting montis. So far they're growing well, and I can blast them weekly to clean the detritus out. Ask me again in a year, it's an sps tank, so the zoos are growing slowly.
