Difference Between Skimz Monzter and Kone?

I was just wondering what would be better in terms of performance - the SKIMZ SM 161 MONZTER E SERIES - IN-SUMP PROTEIN SKIMMER or the SKIMZ SK 181 KONE E SERIES - IN-SUMP PROTEIN SKIMMER? Thanks. I was also wondering if anyone had experience with these or if they had something they liked better in the same price bracket?

mine too. just food for thought. I personally would go for the less expensive non cone. the want ads on rc always has good skimmers for less then i would have thought. for example there's a atb cone on there now for 400$ and a powermodule, 10 x 54 at that, for 600$. my tax return is good as gone! wink wink

Deltec were very good skimmersseveral years ago. BKs are overpriced and there are plenty of skimmers for less money that could match or beat them. I would not base either of them not using a cone as meaning anything.

I've used the SK181, and it was a good skimmer. Not too bad noise wise, and performed well. I did sell mine and go with a Super Reef Octopus 2000 in sump, and it is one of my 2 favorite skimmers...the other being the H&S a150-f2001. Both the SRO and H&S pulled dry and thick enough foam to lift the cover and sheet down the side of the cup. The others I have tried are H&S a2002xf2001, ATB 840, Bubble king mini 160, Smimz 181, Reeflo orca 200 and 250, Octopus PS150, ASM G2, and a handful of other ones I cannot think of at the monment. The SRO has been the best bang for the buck, and cant beat its 3 year pump waranty.

Hmm maybe I'll have to go with a SRO then...I am looking for one with a small footprint though, and all of the SROs seemed like they had a larger footprint.

There are a couple of SRO that are labeled as "space savers". Not sure if their performance is comparable to the others though.

There are larger ones as well.

SRO says their Super Space Savers SSS do not perform as well as their equivalent standard skimmers.

What size is the tank? and how much room do you have to work with.

A 29, and I am still planning my sump now, but with very limited room under my stand, I want most of that to go to the refugium. I am planning to upgrade to a considerably larger tank in the next year and a half or so, and would like to keep the skimmer I buy for this tank. I would probably be willing to devote a 10 x 10 skimmer space at the most.

True BK doesn't, but Vertex Alpha does and they are owned by BK so in a way they do.

At my local fish store they have a Vertex Alpha 250 skimming 600 gallons and a BK supermarine 250 skimming 600 gallons. The Supermarine is larger, it costs approx. 600-700 more than the Vertex Alpha and the Alpha pulls out more waste from the tanks that it skims and both skimmers are cleaning tanks carrying similar livestock.

I bought the Vertex Alpha 250 after I saw it in action at the store and absolutely love it.
